Biografia
Prima di A Whiter Shade Of Pale e Homburg, due dei piu' grandi successi dei '60,
i Procol Harum hanno una piccola storia non banale. Il tastierista Gary Brooker
(n. 1945, GB), nativo del Southend nel 1962 e' leader di un complessino locale
di R&B, i Paramounts. Con Brooker sono Robin Trower (n. 1945, GB), B.J. Wilson e
Chris Copping (poi Dez Derrick).
Starting
with A Whiter Shade of Pale and then Homburg, two of the biggest
successes of the 60s, Procol Harum actually had a bit of interesting history
behind them. Keyboardist Gary Brooker (1945, GB)
came from Southend, and from 1962 was the leader of a minor local R&B band,
The Paramounts. Alongside Brooker were
Robin Trower (1945, GB),
BJ Wilson and Chris Copping (latterly Diz
Derrick).
Tra il 1963 e il 1966 i Paramounts pubblicano 6 singoli per la EMI; uno solo ottiene un certo successo, entrando in classifica (Poison Ivy, dicembre 1963). Nel 1966 il gruppo accompagna Andie Shaw e Chris Andrews in tournee in Gran Bretagna; alla fine dell'anno, pero', si scioglie.
Between 1963 and 1966 the Paramounts put out six singles on EMI; just one had any success, Poison Ivy entering the charts in December 1963. In 1966 the band toured the UK with Andie [sic] Shaw and Chris Andrews; at the end of that year they split up.
Brooker e l'amico Keith Reid, compositore, si impegnano alla ricerca di un nuovo complesso per registrare le loro canzoni. Nascono cosi', nel 1967, i Procol Harum, con Brooker, Matthew Fisher, Dave Knights, Bobby Harrison e Ray Royer. Nel maggio 1967 esce A Whiter Shade Of Pale, grande successo internazionale di quella estate e numero 1 in Inghilterra, di cui esiste anche la cover in italiano dei Dik Dik, dal titolo Senza luce.
Brooker and his friend, the writer Keith Reid, got down to the business of putting together a new band to record their own songs. Thus, in 1967, was born Procol Harum, featuring Brooker, Matthew Fisher, Dave Knights, Bobby Harrison and Ray Royer. In May 1967 out came A Whiter Shade Of Pale, the big international success of that summer, a number 1 hit in England – of which there even exists an Italian cover, entitled Senza Luce, by I Dik Dik.
Nel disco, insieme ai Procol Harum suonano vari sessionmen. Harrison e Royer se ne vanno quasi subito, sostituiti dagli ex Paramounts Robin Trower e B.J. Wilson. La nuova formazione incide Homburg, secondo successo basato come il precedente su un pop rock di maniera, con un marcato suono d'organo vagamente "classico"; e' uno dei primi esempi di quel pop sofisticato e ambiguamente "artistico" che avra' grande fortuna negli anni successivi con Nice, Yes, King Crimson e gruppi affini. Anche di Homburg esiste una cover in italiano, ad opera dei Camaleonti, L'ora dell'amore.
On
the record, various [sic]
session men played alongside Procol Harum. Harrison and Royer jumped ship almost
at once, to be replaced by the ex-Paramounts Robin Trower and BJ Wilson. The new
line-up recorded Homburg, a second success based, like its predecessor,
on a mannered pop rock with a distinctive organ sound that was vaguely
classical. It was one of the first examples of that sophisticated, arguably
‘artistic’, pop music that would hit the big time in the following years with
The Nice, Yes, King Crimson and suchlike groups.

Italian cover version, in the hands of The Camaleonti:

Sull'onda del successo i Procol Harum
pubblicano Procol Harum, Shine on Brightly, A Salty Dog, sorprendentemente
snobbati in patria ma ben accolti negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1969 Fisher e Knights
se ne vanno ed entra Chris Copping; si ristabilisce cosi' l'originaria
formazione dei Paramounts, che pubblica Home, ultimo album per la Regal
Zonophone. Alla fine del 1970 il gruppo firma un nuovo contratto con la
Chrysalis con nuove prospetttive artistiche e forti del successo riscosso nei
'60. Intanto, la Cube, che ha acquisito il vecchio repertorio, procede a una
serie di ristampe del materiale originale.
On this wave of success Procol Harum came out with Procol Harum, Shine on Brightly, A Salty Dog, surprisingly snubbed in their homeland, but well-received in the USA. In 1969 Fisher and Knights took their leave: enter Chris Copping, thus re-establishing the original line-up [sic] of the Paramounts. They released Home, the band’s final Regal Zonophone album. At the end of 1970 the band signed a new contract with Chrysalis, with new artistic prospects, and riding high on the back of their 60s success. By the way Cube, having acquired rights to the old repertoire, knocked out a series of retreads of the first four albums.
Broken Barricades non
riscuote alcun successo in Gran Bretagna ma entra nei Top 40 americani; nel
disco un brano dedicato a Hendrix, Song For A Dreamer, scritto da Trower che nel
luglio del 1971 decide per la carriera solista (suonera' prima con i Judee,
quindi formera' un trio di chiara impostazione hendrixiana, con buon successo).
In formazione entrano Alan Cartwright (n. 1945, GB, gia' con Every Which Way) e
Dave Ball (n. 1950, GB dai Big Bertha) e i rinnovati Procol Harum tentano la
carta ambiziosa del rock orchestrale.
Broken Barricades didn’t get anywhere in the UK, but entered the US top
40. On the disc one track was dedicated to Jimi Hendrix: Song For A Dreamer,
written by Trower. In July 1971 he opted for a solo career (initially playing
with Judee [sic]),
then going on to form a trio, clearly in the Hendrix mould, which did very well.
Into the Procol line-up came Alan Cartwright
(1945, GB, previously with Every Which Way) and Dave
Ball (1950, GB, from Big Bertha) and the renewed Procol Harum took on the
ambitious challenge of orchestral rock.
Durante un tour americano registrano Live in Concert con la Edmonton Symphony Orchestra e relativo coro; nello stesso periodo, la versione orchestrale di Conquistador (un brano dell'album d'esordio, 1968) riscuote un sorprendente successo anche in patria. Sara' quello l'ultimo hit del gruppo, che negli anni successivi si abbandonera' a stucchevoli lavori di scarsa risonanza. Alla fine del 1972 entra in gruppo Mick Grabham, che esordisce in concerto al Rainbow ancora con un'orchestra sinfonica. Grand Hotel entra ancora nelle classifiche americane ma e' l'inizio del declino. Il successivo Exotic Birds and Fruits, decisamente orientato verso sonorita' piu' dure, sconcerta un pubblico abituato ad armonie melodiche e sofisticate.
In the course of an American tour they recorded Live in Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and its associated choir. In that same era the orchestral version of Conquistador (a track from their début album in 1968 [sic]) achieved a surprising success even in their homeland. This was to be the group's last [sic] hit: in the following years they resigned themselves to churning out stuff that didn’t strike much of a chord. At the end of 1972 Mick Grabham joined the band, making his début in concert at The Rainbow, once again with symphony orchestra. Grand Hotel once again hit the US charts, but marked the beginning of the end for Procol. Its follow-up, Exotic Birds and Fruits [sic], decisively turning back to a harder sound, disconcerted a public that was accustomed to sophisticated and melodic harmonies.
Per le sessions di Procol's Ninth, i Procol lavorano coi leggendari Leiber & Stoller; ma un solo pezzo di quel disco, Pandora's Box, riscuote successo. Nel marzo 1975 il gruppo partecipa al concerto di chiusura del Rainbow Theatre. L'anno seguente Pete Solley (Chris Farlowe, Arthur Brown, Paladin) sostituisce Cartwright e il gruppo pubblica Something Magic, ultimo atto della lunga carriera discografica. Lo scioglimento, tuttavia, verra' annunciato solo tempo dopo. Di tutti i membri, soltanto Brooker fara parlare di se' prima come solista, poi come manager del cantante Frankie Miller.
For the Procol's Ninth sessions Procol worked with the legendary Leiber & Stoller; yet only one track from it, Pandora's Box, tasted success. In March 1975 the band took part in the concert to mark the closing of the Rainbow Theatre. The following year Pete Solley (Chris Farlowe, Arthur Brown, Paladin) replaced Cartwright [sic] and the group issued Something Magic, the final act in a long discographic career. Their break-up, when all’s said and done, was announced just a short while later [sic]. Of all the members, only Brooker would go on to speak with his own voice as a soloist, and then as manager [sic] of Frankie Miller.
