What was new at 'Beyond the Pale'

February 2004

February 29:

Added a perceptive and approving contemporary review of The Prodigal Stranger (thanks, Craig)

The songs on that album are commented on in detail in our 'Taking Notes and Stealing Quotes' series: have a look here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here

February 28:

Added a very complimentary, short review of Procol Harum on record with 76 other musicians, 'not dicking about' (thanks, Craig)

Remind yourself about the first time A Salty Dog was ever played with an orchestra

February 27:

"Matthew Fisher is much more like the way people think I am. Actually, I'm pretty light-hearted ..."

Added a good Keith Reid interview from 1992 (thanks, Craig)

If you had forgotten about the Procol organist referred to in the interview above, refresh your memory of BtP's excellent Procol Family Tree  and here(thanks, Jonas)

February 26:

Added some pictures from the No Stiletto Shoes concert in Southend last December

Added a link to the webpage for the Tring Festival this March where Geoff Whitehorn will be appearing

February 25:

'Most people were floating around in some ephemeral cloud'

Added an interesting piece from The Scene, 1972 (thanks, Craig)

February 24:

We now have removed the now obsolete statistics code on all 3,600+ pages of BtP. Quite a Mammoth task, and we hope you appreciate the slightly faster loading of pages.

May we remind you of the excellent 'Procolpaedia', listing numerous surprising links between many rock names and Procol Harum (thanks, Sam): please (re)visit for many pages of interesting reading.

February 23:

Made a welcome addition to a Fan's Tour Diary: Islington, December 2003 (thanks, Allen)

Remember that BtP has an index of tours, but is always keen to hear of more concerts Procol have played, that may not be listed already.

And many thanks to the people who have responded to our request for archival materials already!

February 22:

"I'm not sure what kind of music the Moody Blues play, but we play rock'n'roll!"

Added the tracklisting and interesting liner note from Metro's latest Procol compilation (thanks, Phil). Buy this album now for a Philistine friend and convert them to Procol Harum ... or Amazon UK will do the trick.

We've put lots of links into the above page. Do click on them and enjoy some lateral surfing through the 3,600+ pages of 'Beyond the Pale'.

At BtP we are always looking for more contributions to add to our Procol history page. Have a look - there may be articles here that you haven't read. Equally, you may have Procoloid articles in your drawer that are not present on the site : in which case, please contact us.

Someone who sent us a very interesting package of articles this morning was a Mrs F Brooker from Surrey, UK (thanks, Franky). Great numbers of these pieces, however, are written in Portuguese. If there's someone in Portugal, or in Latin America, who would like to do some translating for BtP and the fans, please contact us!

February 21:

Added an article about Gary Brooker from a 1995 tabloid newspaper in the UK (thanks, Phil)

From time to time we add examples to the page of Procol mondegreens, which has lately attracted some nice attention on 'The Beanstalk', the Procol Harum Interactive Message List, which you can join by visiting this page (thanks, Peter)

February 20:

Added an advertisement relating to the last Procol Harum tour of the UK : 1995's 'Bucket and Spade' tour, as Geoff Whitehorn called it.

Read more about Procol's 1995 activities, including reviews from The Guardian, The Times, and The Evening Standard

Added an unexpected cover version: Too Much Between Us (thanks, Jonas)

Note: a new version of this fine song is among the 40 tracks on the new Palers' Project record, From Shadow to Shadow. We do not yet have a release date for this long-awaited 2CD album, but we do hope to offer a special pre-release price for 'Beyond the Pale' visitors. So watch this page in coming weeks.

February 19:

Added a ticket (and a little concert-review) from 15 July 1972 (thanks, Litt)

Added words of 99 Degrees, song co-authored by Keith Reid (thanks, Sam)

February 12:

Added a first page showing the starry constitution of Gary Brooker and Friends at Guildford last month

Guildford was the venue, of course, for the first Procol Harum gig of the new millennium, back when they took the stage with seven musicians (to say nothing of a symphony orchestra)

Have a look back at Procol at the same venue, twelve months earlier ... some band-members have changed more than others

February 4:

Remind yourself of the great evaluation of Procol Harum by Billie G Eyeball at 'Beyond the Pale' ... and visit his own website.

All the prizes from our Christmas Competitions went out by mail last month to the Triumphant Victors (thanks, John; thanks, Linda). If and when you receive yours, please let us know briefly.
