Shine On-line

Editorial: Diane Rolph & John Grayson

AN OMISSION!
Richard Myers wrote to remind us that we’d forgotten to include the answer our picture question in the previous Shine On.

The original photo actually also includes Gary and Robin Trower. It was a rather short-lived Paramounts line-up in 1966, and was taken from a tour programme when The Paramounts were out on the road with Adam Faith, Sandie Shaw and The Barron Knights. The Paramounts had a spot on their own, and also backed Sandy Shaw.

The two Paramounts pictured were Graham (Diz) Derrick and Phil Wainman. Barrie Wilson had temporarily left The Paramounts to team up with his schoolfriend Kenny White in Jimmy Powell and the Five Dimensions. Aunt Maud may have had a little hand in Procol history, because it was she who phoned Gary to tell him Barrie was unhappy and wanted to return to The Paramounts, so Phil Wainman’s career with The Paramounts was very short-lived! GB tells me he went on to become a very successful record producer.

BARBICAN CONCERT RECORDING
Shine On has been informed by the Music Performance Research Centre at The Barbican Library that the archive recording of the Procol Harum / LSO Concert in February 1996 has been the most listened to document in their library. Not bad eh!

Gary has been asked to help raise money for the MPRC by being their March 1999 Artist in Profile. This involves talking about his musical career to an audience. The interviewer will be Douglas Adams, which helps! Much better to be interviewed by someone who loves your music. March 16th at The Barbican is the date, limited seating only.

A PROCOL PLAYS MY LOCAL
It's not often you open your local paper and find a Procol is playing in your local on a Saturday night, but it happened here recently when Dave Bronze teamed up as a duo with Steve Simpson to play at The Yew Tree pub on Reigate Hill. Very fine music it was too. Full marks to Dave for being able to play bass, sing and followspot himself at the same time!

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WINTERSHALL
Which raised £150,000 for local good causes around Guildford. Very memorable performances from Sir Bob Geldof, Roger Taylor and of course Gary, with Ringo’s band. Brilliant night, especially when Jeremy Clarkson appeared unexpectedly from behind Rory Bremner and tipped a bottle of beer over his head while he was doing an impersonation of ... Jeremy Clarkson.
