'Too Many Poets'

The Cruel Tree (Haplesc Fhoole)

Key to authors' pseudonyms

Saint Securis went walking with the trees
and the trees went walking with him
Saint Securis told them of the Lord
while sitting in the shade of their limbs

the townsfolk nearby were sore afraid
and did not know what was real
when the spirit moved among the trees
they followed the Saint at his heels

and he loved the trees for they were gentle
they devoured nothing but sun
and he prayed they might be quick with him
but still when their lessons were done

but there was one tree that stood apart
in its branches it heard a voice
a hissing speaker sunning there
who posed a terrible choice

the voice then praised the tree for strength
so taught it the sin of pride
and the birds that roosted in the tree
it pulled them apart and they died

the cruel tree hid among the others
still through the winter's run
but in blossom time it grew bright feathers
and the Saint knew what it had done

and Securis chopped down the tree of pride
and fed its logs to the fire
which hissed and burst upwards and sang
how life is all desire
