'Too Many Poets'

The Tomato Plant I Fancy (Clarence Birdseye)

Key to authors' pseudonyms

My shovel and my pansies
Are all I have to show
For this stinking garden
Beyond those dumb hedgerows
For a long time I’ve been planting
Yet nothing ‘s come around,
Could it be the earth’s lost faith in me
And left me fallow ground?

I’m going over, going over
This vacant land—hand to hand—
And if I don’t fertilize No tomatoes will arise
Except in cans—at the grocer’s stand.

My shovel and my pansies
are all I have to show
If I really had a green thumb
how does your garden grow?
Perhaps if I were Shakespeare
I'd sing the plants to rise
But I sing like Robert Plant
and all these plants just die.

I’m going over, going over
This vacant land—hand to hand—
And if I don’t fertilize No tomatoes will arise
I'll buy a ham at the grocer’s stand.
