'Too Many Poets'

Hey Surfer Dude (Hernando Cortez)

Key to authors' pseudonyms

Inspired by the fact that Gary Brooker has said that Conquistador was written with The Beach Boys in mind, although they never actually heard it or recorded it. Matthew Fisher has said that this story is rubbish, but I'm not so sure -- perhaps The Beach Boys would have preferred this version instead? ...

Hey surfer dude, your surfboard stands
In need of being shone,
and like those sun gods on the beach
you reek of Coppertone.
I see your Body Gloved chest
has long since lost its tan,
and on your Sex-Waxed board
there are now signs of crusted sand.

And though you hope for waves you can ride
you can see no tide that is high.

Hey surfer dude, your bitchin' babe
sits on your silver Bug,
and in this rusty set of wheels
the sand lies on the rug.
And though your weather-beaten bod'
stands proudly and is brave,
the stubble growing on your face
is in need of a shave.

And though you hope for waves you can ride
you can see no tide that is high.

Hey surfer dude, there is no time
the tide is rolling out,
and though you hoped for awesome waves
you leave now with some doubt.
As as the sun begins to set
you see your wetsuit isn't wet.
And though you came with board held high
you did not "hang ten" -- now you sigh.

And though you hope for waves you can ride
you can see no tide that is high.
