I just finished listening to the two released versions of Repent Walpurgis that I am aware of. The first, from PH’s first album and the second, from The Long Goodbye: Symphonic Music of Procol Harum are, in my opinion, both equally good renditions of Matthew Fisher’s excellent song writing and performing skills. I like Matt’s playing of the All Saints Church organ in the symphonic album a little better. It has that great majestic sound only found in a great hall.
I like RT’s guitar sound in the first album much better than his performance on the symphonic album. My favorite part in the first album is about three-quarters of the way thru the song where Gary and Matthew play quietly together slowly building towards the finish with the entire band. On the symphonic album this same part is also moving as the organ, choir and harp play together. Two great performances of a great song.
