Ringo's All Starr Band

Dublin, 20 August 1998

A Salty Dog in Dublin: Gary came to the Point!

Did you know that Dublin has hosted the «Cutty Sark Tall Ship Race» last weekend? An unexpected ship (not exhibited along the river Liffey but hearable in the Point Theatre) conquered most Dubliners' hearts: the famous Salty Dog!

Within the concert of Ringo and All Starr Band, it was for me a moment of intense emotion when Gary started to play the famous intro on his Korg, followed by the « ... All hands on deck ... » sung with his incomparable deep and warm voice.

The whole song has been played solo, Gary backing the piano melody by synthesised strings arrangements. Wonderful surprise! Apparently, as I have noticed in the set list on Ringo's website, Salty Dog was not previously played in this tour.

I also appreciated the «revamping» of Whisky Train, as well as Conquistador and AWSoP, which received a standing ovation after the first few notes (the audience was sitting so far ...).

Thank you, Sir Gary and the All Starrs, for these magic moments! The only ship able to compete this evening 20th August with the Salty Dog was a certain Yellow Submarine ...

This piece kindly submitted by 'a traveller in Ireland: François Courvoisier, from Switzerland.. He adds, 'I have been able to take one evening off in Dublin within a business trip in Ireland. I have therefore attended the gig in the Point Theatre. The ambience of the whole concert was very familiar (teenagers as well as grey hairs) and the audience very receptive to this 'classical music' (singing along the melodies). I don't personally share the criticism and sceptic comments of this tour that I have read otherwhere on the web. Perhaps Dublin's audience was outstanding?
