Christmas Conundrums 2003

Our fifteen fab prizes ...

Each year at Christmas, following the Scandinavian custom, BtP sets twelve days of Procol puzzles which great numbers of Palers follow with great interest and merriment ... at the end of the trail is a one-word answer, which you send in by e-mail to the webmasters, to win one (or more?) of the prizes below. The puzzles start on Christmas Day and they get easier and easier year by year, while the prizes get more and more munificent.

This year's fifteen freebies are, if possible, even more splendid than 1997's or 1998's or 1999's or 2000's or 2001's or 2002's: this is largely thanks to the generosity of our very kind friends at Shine On, Metro Records ... and of One-Eye and Franky and Gary Brooker.

2CD: Procol Harum, 'The First Four' : the Legendary Albums (nice 2003 package from Metro records!) (thanks, Shine On)

A 2001 Procol Harum tee-shirt with Italia tour-dates and Salty Dog lifebelt motif (thanks, Shine On)

A 'Beyond the Pale'  baseball cap and a 'Beyond the Pale' car-window sticker (thanks, Shine On)

A comic photo-collage (A4 size) by Matt Pegg from Procol's 2003 world tour, signed by all five onstage members of Procol Harum, and also featuring Jules, John, Tony and Derek from the road crew, Front-of-House sound-man Graham Ewins, and manager Chris Cooke (thanks, Matt; thanks, Franky)

A good 'Best-Of' Procol CD on the Repertoire label (thanks, Shine On)

A Procol tee-shirt from 2003's Japanese tour (thanks, One-Eye)

A Procol tour poster from 2003, signed by all five band members (thanks, Gary and Franky)

BBC CD: Procol Harum live in Concert, 1974, signed by Gary Brooker (thanks, Gary and Franky)

Broken Barricades CD on Gary Brooker's Gazza label (thanks, Shine On)

CD: The Prodigal Stranger ... 'The Interview' ... a promo item from The Prodigal Stranger era, featuring Brooker, Fisher, Trower and Reid (thanks, Gary and Franky)

One glossy souvenir programme (essays, pictures) from the 30th Birthday Party for A Whiter Shade of Pale at Redhill in 1997, where BtP was born! (thanks, Shine On)

One Procol tee-shirt ... The Well's on Fire design, red/yellow globe on black (thanks, Shine On)

The 2004 Palers' Project 2CD, not yet named ... you will be sent this as soon as it's ready!

The bound book anthology of the early Shine On Procol magazines ... now a nice rarity! (thanks, Shine On)

The first Procol Harum album on Repertoire CD (thanks, Shine On)

Competitors should rank the above prizes in the order they favour them, and send in their preference with the solution to the puzzles. The message will look something like : "Prize preferences: IACKBOJFGEMNDH"

We shall allot the first three prizes on a beat-the-clock basis, with the earliest correct response earning its first choice of prize; after that all subsequent correct entries received in the next 24 hours will be placed in the BtP Homburg and the remaining dozen prizewinners will be drawn by a suitably Glamorous Assistant.

In the somewhat unlikely event of there being fewer than fifteen winners, the first people to submit correct answers will get more than their fair share of the prizes!

The quiz starts on Christmas Day and runs through to Twelfth Night. This year it asks you to identify Procol gigs by means of descriptions of who was there, what was played, and so on: all you need is some basic PH knowledge, and BtP's list of setlists. You can join in at any time, if you have a pencil and an internet connection! The answer at the end will be a single word, as in previous years.
