At the time of writing we're about
half-way through the auction and bidding is
going swimmingly ... with two curious anomalies: items with Whiter Shade of
Pale in the title
have thus far attracted almost no attention at all, despite the fact that one of
them is probably the rarest surviving 45 rpm version of the famous tune.
Time will tell ...

|
An actual
BtP webmaster holds the actual prizes in his actual hands, ready to send them out to you, the actual winners!
One six-disc prize in the left hand, |
|
|
The 4-disc set CD / DVD / Blu-Ray
of 2003's Brooker Memorial Concert costs nearly 40 GBP |
The 2-disc set of 1983’s Brooker
Band Rockpalast concert in Hamburg costs 24.99 GBP from HMV |
|
|
By participating in this prize
competition – designed to be super-easy – you can
win
both these 2025
items (from concerts forty years apart) and have them
posted to you anywhere in the world
by your friends at ‘Beyond the Pale’

(1)
Carefully
read the webpage at ebay-marsden2.htm
and familiarise yourself with all the items, from ‘A’ to ‘Z’, that we’re
going to auction in aid of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity (29 May’s auction
raised 1,600+ GBP)
(2)
Carefully
watch
the YouTube film here
in
which Franky Brooker introduces the Procol / Brooker memorabilia that will
feature in the same eBay auction
|
Notes |
Please note, you absolutely don’t need to bid
for anything or buy anything to enter the competition.
But obviously, the point of this puzzle is partly to make everyone acquainted with what’s going to be available, and we certainly hope lots of people will see things they like, and make a free choice to participate generously in the auction |
Then you needed to answer two questions correctly. Here they come ...
(1)
Look again at the items on
the webpage at ebay-marsden2.htm
, and – for each item (‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ and
so on) – ask yourself ‘Did I see this item in
the YouTube film ?’
|
Notes |
It’s not a trick question … you should easily find several items of memorabilia pictured on the page, but not seen in the film. We’re interested in all the ‘extra’ items that are listed on the page but don’t appear in the film |
Now make a note of the alphabetical letter assigned to each 'extra' item on
the webpage at ebay-marsden2.htm
.
|
Note |
For instance, the chocolate record is item ‘D’ and it obviously is featured in the film … so the letter ‘D’ will not be in your answer |
So … collect the alphabetical letters relating to items found on
the page and not seen in
the film,
and arrange them to make a well-known English word.
|
Notes |
For instance, if your answers are ‘E’, ‘M’, ‘O’, ‘S’ and ‘U’, a suitable
answer would be ‘MOUSE’
Any combination of the alphabetical letters is acceptable provided the outcome is a recognisable word from contemporary British or US English. 'USOME' would not be acceptable |
That's the end of question (1). Hang on to your answer, and at the foot of the page we'll tell you what to do with it.
(2)
To answer the second question you again need to read the text on
the webpage at ebay-marsden2.htm carefully.
For each of the items, ‘A’ to ‘Z’, there’s a 'click' instruction on the page
telling you how to view a larger image.
So the question for you is: how many of the 26 instructions beginning with the word ‘Click’ are identical to each other?
|
Notes |
Example:
‘Click the picture, right, for a larger view’ These two instructions, above, are identical |
Whereas …
‘Click the
picture, right, for a larger view’ These two are not identical … one uses the word ‘picture’ and the other uses ‘image’.
So the answer would be ‘zero’, if we were
looking at just these two instructions |
|
|
|
Again, it’s not a trick question …. it’s all about carefully and patiently looking at the wording.
And so your answer will be a number ... possibly 'zero', possibly 'twenty-six', or any other integer in between.
|
Notes |
And in the end … let’s be frank … we just want all fans to be fully aware of the upcoming auction, so we have a good set of bids and can send another wadge or wodge of cash to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, effectively continuing Gary Brooker’s good work and honouring Franky’s intentions in passing all these items on |
Oh oh … yes ...
The other intention is to save a couple of lucky fans the price (over 60 GBP) of the two most hotly-anticipated Procol-type releases of the last two years (thanks, Esoteric Records and MadeinGermany)
So could I have won?
By sending the two answers. one relating to each question, to
webmaster@procolharum.com with your name and street address.
If both your answers were correct, your name went in the BtP Homburg, and stood a chance of winning in the draw. There were be two (2) winners ... each winner got both albums.
The draw aforesaid occured in the first minute or so of Tuesday 2 September 2025, UK time.
|
Notes |
Remember to send your street address, or we can’t include you in the draw. This is because it wastes so much time writing to winners to find out where they live, and then, if they don’t respond, telling someone else they’re the winner, and then having to undo all that when the original winner’s address is eventually sent through. Experience has taught us this since we ran our first annual Procol Prize competition back in 1997
As you know we’re not going do anything with your address |
That's it ...
Those links again ... the webpage list and the YouTube film for your careful scrutiny and enjoyment!
