Gary Brooker (studio
shot, June 1967) wearing the embroidered red silk robe he later (July) wore to
sing
A Whiter Shade of Pale on BBC TV's Top of the Pops during Procol
Harum's fifth week at No 1
Monochrome screenshot of this silken oriental finery – complete with
tack-on pigtail – on the BBC's chart show:
this was the performance with the ingenuously flubbed
words: full story here
These recent photos show
Gary in the control room of
his studio in deepest Surrey, displaying the garment, front and back.
The silk
lining, satin finish, and embroidered brocade work are all in exceptional
condition and show no signs of the garment's age
There's no
size-marking on the robe, but for bidders' guidance the headless stooge in the
above photos stands 70 inches high, has a 37-inch chest and weighs about 160
pounds.
Above: front,
back. Your bids are invited for this
exceptionally magical and collectable
oriental robe, which Gary has kept,
mothballed in a zip-fronted bag, for about 45 years now: it still sparkles
with glossy colour, as these pictures show
This
photograph shows the only blemish, two small black dots of unknown origin: you
have to look pretty hard to find them.
We imagine this
extraordinary keepsake from the Summer of Love will be bought by a musician, to
be worn for occasional performance;
equally, it would make a magical dressing-gown, as a present for a man or woman;
or it may well end up framed in
a
rock memorabilia collection. Bids are of course welcome from anybody!
Gary Brooker
has invited 'Beyond the Pale' to auction this garment, the proceeds to
be divided between The BJ Wilson Fund (through which Gary is able to
help the great percussionist's family) and 'Beyond the Pale' itself.
Please bid
generously, and good luck!
