Procol Harum in Denmark

November 1975

Bøje Arenholt Jeppesen sends us three Danish souvenirs of Procol: he of course may be heard playing and singing two PH tracks on the Whalers' CD and, as he says, "You can thank this gig (below) for that!"

Bøje (see illustration) says, "Well it's a little hard for me to write anything about this particular gig (setlist here), since I wasn't there! But, a few days later, I saw Procol for the very first time in my life!

"As you see on the attached ticket, it was on 22 November 1975 at the "Vejlby-Risskov Hallen" in Århus. I was just 13 years old at that time, and I have to say, this concert left one hell of impression on me.

"You have to remember that it was in the mid 70s, when most of the live acts in Denmark were provided by mainstream artists like Dr Hook, Sweet, Slade, Smokie, etc.

"Eventually my big brother decided I needed to be educated in terms of serious music, and took me (despite my age, and certainly NOT to my mother's amusement), to a couple of gigs with Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, etc. I might have to thank him for that - it really changed my view on music.
"I found the picture (left) in my drawer - it's taken by my big brother, and I'm almost sure that he took it on that very tour in '75.

"However, it's not from the gig in Århus, but Viborg, where PH played at "Tinghallen" on 18 November.

Note BJ's LH grip!

"On the Procol gig at Århus, I remember we were sitting on the first row somewhat in the right side, and thereby watching BJ drumming like - well, an octopus in a bathtub - just a few feet away. I never forget this sight. Vejlby-Risskov Hallen is quite a large place, and I would say the concert was attended by about 2,000 people. After a number of encores - the last of course AWSoP - the band left the stage with BJ in the front, banging on a tambourine with the rest of the members clapping and cheering."
