As well as her Barrie Wilson
scrapbook, Pam Quinn sent us BJ's copy of Accents and
Rebounds, a 48-page book (published 1961) of
exercises for the snare-drummer, by George Lawrence
Stone, whose face adorns the front cover. Much more interesting, however, are the autographs of various members of the Miracles: Claudette, Pete, Ronnie … and Smokey Robinson himself: 'To my pal Barry [sic]' with the 'y' then changed to an 'e'!. |

There's nothing written on
the text (see example left) to indicate which pages
Barrie studied. In fact only the first few folios have a
'used' look and the rest are still pretty pristine. Instrumentalists visiting this page will be all-too-familiar with this pattern of 'use' in tutorial volumes! (RC) |
Frans Steensma adds:
Barrie could have met Smokey at two possible moments: (a) on 1
December 1964, Smokey & The Miracles arrived in the UK for a
short promotional tour (seven shows in twelve days). Amongst
these were Ready Steady Go and ATV's Lucky Stars.
Could be that Barrie met them during one of these shows; (b)
Smokey & the Miracles toured the UK from 20 March 1965 (21
dates to promote Motown: Barrie could have gone to any of these
shows and gotten backstage (more
