This slightly inconsequential
feature takes four young men from one seaside town and
teaches them to sail in another! Brixham is down in the
south-west of England, though you don't see much of its
picturesqueness in these shots. The Lennon-like headgear reminds us, perhaps, that there is a Beatlish Hard Day's Night-like quality about this sort of escapade. (RC) Frans Steensma adds: Gary had happy memories about their sailing lesson in Devon: smiling faces all around. This article is from Fabulous (24 July 1965) (more from Frans here) |

Brixham, here we are! Paramounts Diz (left), Robb (centre) and Barry [sic] head for the harbour and their sailing lesson. That's Gary peeping into the page down there on the right.
Lesson begins, and the tiller extension is passed to Diz via Robb. That, I gather, controls which way you go! | Hullo! From the grins, it looks like someone's been clobbered by the boom. But actually, Robb and Barry are just agreeing that learning to sail is fun.
This is how you reef a sail. It doesn't usually take four people to do it. Mr Rosser, our instructor, (on the right of the picture) could probably do it blindfolded. |
