Never Mind the Buzzcocks (2)

BBC2 Sunday 6 February 2005

Gary Brooker was on Phil Jupitus's team and was introduced by compère Mark Lamarr thus:

"Phil's first guest is the singer/songwriter/keyboardist of seminal sixties band Procol Harum – it's Gary Brooker!" (thirty seconds follow of two video extracts featuring AWSoP from the earliest days ... only GB shown on screen).

"The idea for Procol Harum's biggest hit came when the band overheard a man saying to his drunk girlfriend, "You've gone a whiter shade of pale. Luckily for them they didn't hear the rest of the conversation – "Oh not all over my suede jacket, you silly cow! That won't come out."

There was a recurring theme in this show that Gary was not quite up-to-speed with the concept of the show - they told him the titles of a couple of songs that he was supposed to guess!

But he appeared to be having an amusing time with Phil and at least tolerating Mark Lamarr's juvenile humour. He unerringly spotted the correct drummer in the 'identity Parade' feature.

And his team won!

Screenshot of GB in 1967, feeling kind of seasick

And another from the introductory film-sequence

Much pantomime myopia, as Gary makes it clear to Lamarr that he has no prior knowledge of the show's routines

The teams at their seats in the studio

Phil's team listen to Lamarr

Gary studies the monitor built into the desktop

Gary does some thinking

Big Phil and Gary vocally busking the intro to Boney M's Rasputin ...

... 'One of my least favourite records' said the Commander, sotto voce

Probably wincing at some witticism

Gary thoroughly enjoying the show ...

Thanks, Charlie Allison!
