Live at Edmonton competition

The Salvo reissues giveaway, August 2009

The very amiable people at Salvo Records sent BtP this excellent album to give away. As with all BtP's competitions, you simply had to read and enact a simple instruction, and send us a message consisting of a number ... and this immaculately remastered recording could have been yours! You had to click on the image to find out more about the album ... then carefully read the instructions beside it ...

As was our wont, we were asking you to listen carefully to some music (of course, the real album sounds a whole lot better than our compressed mp3 that follows)

Click here to listen to an mp3 medley of the songs on the album (left). You'll hear mixed-up bits of Conquistador / Whaling Stories / A Salty Dog / All This and More / Glimpses of Nirvana / 'Twas Teatime at the Circus / In the Autumn of my Madness / Look to Your Soul / Grand Finale / Luskus Delph / Simple Sister / Shine on Brightly ... songs that sound so good that we've excerpted (most of) them twice. Count the 'In Held' suite as five separate items, as the list above suggests, and use the track-numbers quoted here.

All you have to do is tell us the number of the track that has not been used twice in the medley. It's that easy!

Click here to send us the track-number of the song that isn't used twice in our medley representing this Salvo re-issue album. The competition ended at 23:59 GMT on Friday 14 August 2009.

If your answer was correct we put your name in a hat, and conducted the draw during Saturday 15 August – and the first name out of that hat won Live at Edmonton !

Responses:
Although there were lots of responses again – clearly another popular and covetable CD – quite a number were wide of the mark. Glimpses of Nirvana and Conquistador were the most popular incorrect answers. One competitor kindly assured us that 'you guys are evil'; it was reassuring that another message asserted that 'the musical collage was very well done'.

What you heard:
5c In the Autumn of My Madness (opening) / 5e Grand Finale (bass start) / 4 All This and More (piano interlude) / 6 Lusksus Delph (piano intro) / 3 A Salty Dog (piano interlude) with 5a Glimpses of Nirvana (KR speaking) / 7 Simple Sister (turnback riff) / 2 Whaling Stories (Shalimar!) / 5c In the Autumn of My Madness (ending) / 5e Grand Finale (last verse) / 1 Conquistador (organ break) / 8 Shine on Brightly (organ solo) / 5b 'Twas Teatime at the Circus (nimbo-faecal Spoonerism) / 2 Whaling Stories (big chords) / 5d Look to Your Soul (vocal) / 1 Conquistador (strings) / 8 Shine on Brightly (vocal) / 7 Simple Sister (guitar) / 5b 'Twas Teatime at the Circus (chorus) / 6 Luskus Delph (orchestra) / 5d Look to Your Soul (lesson lies in learning) / 3 A Salty Dog (your witness) / 4 All This and More (guitar) / 5a Glimpses of Nirvana (piano descending) / 2 Whaling Stories (Oy!)

Solution and winner:
So which track was not used twice? All the songs were used at least twice, but only Whaling Stories was excerpted three times: so the desired answer was simply '2'. The lucky winner from the hat was Fred Schröter. Please send us your 'real' world address, and this appetising item will soon be with you!

Congratulations to all the near-winners who were not selected, and commiserations to the many entrants whose answers were 'divergent' ... we hope you enjoy the album from some other source (suggestions here)
