'Novum' review

Good Times, Germany • June 2017

They still can do it! No doubt – of course – Novum does sound like Procol Harum in spite of fourteen years of being out of the studio, not least because of Gary Brooker’s striking voice and his unmistakable piano-playing.

But the guitarist Geoff Whitehorn and the co-keyboarder Josh Phillips contribute important, partly also modern components.

How the band varies the playing dynamics in Business Man can fill us with enthusiasm: the guitar intro shuffle could have come from Status Quo. The strings give Sunday Morning a very special affectionate note with an affinity to the Beatles.

Soldier grips you because of its message against war from the songwriter Pete Brown [sic] – and, and, and …

Every time you listen to it again you can find new details in everything that is new but also well-known.

Waiting has been worth it.

(trans. Doris Volkhardt ... thanks!)
