This 'Beyond the Pale' prize competition is now closed! We
must apologise to all the competitors ... though we did make the draw, we
forgot to publish the outcome! Hope nobody has been grossly inconvenienced by
this oversight.
The competition gave you the
chance to win All This and More, thanks to the very nice people at
Salvo Records. As usual, the answer was a single word. (Send more than one
word, and your answer would not have been counted).
We asked you to cast an eye over our scan of the back cover of the Box Set
and identify the fifteen Procol
Harum members are depicted/ We asked you to see how many you
could identify from a list containing
Alan Cartwright / BJ Wilson / Chris
Copping / Dave Ball / Dave Bronze / Dave Knights / Gary Brooker / Geoff Dunn /
Geoff Whitehorn / Ian Wallace / Josh Phillips / Mark Brzezicki / Matt Pegg /
Matthew Fisher / Mick Grabham / Pete Solley / Robin Trower. You will have
noticed that Gary Brooker and Ian Wallace are not shown.
When you'd identified who was who in the scan, you had to write out the names in order, running clockwise, starting from Mick Grabham and ending at Chris Copping:
Mick Grabham |
Alan Cartwright |
Pete Solley |
Mark Brzezicki |
Matt Pegg |
Geoff Dunn |
Dave Bronze |
Josh Phillips |
Matthew Fisher |
Geoff Whitehorn |
Dave Ball |
BJ Wilson |
Dave Knights |
Robin Trower |
Chris Copping |
In the next phase of the puzzle, each musician's name corresponded to five red letters of the alphabet as follows:
Alan Cartwright
AEHIO;
BJ Wilson
ANRST;
Chris Copping
ELNRS;
Dave Ball
ABCOS;
Dave Bronze
GHNWR;
Dave Knights
EGIMR
Gary Brooker EGMOS;
Geoff Dunn
INOST;
Geoff Whitehorn
FHIPR;
Ian Wallace
AEMLR;
Josh Phillips
ABEKO;
Mark Brzezicki
BEGKN
Matt Pegg EFILN;
Matthew Fisher
DFLOR;
Mick Grabham
MPRST;
Pete Solley
EINPR;
Robin Trower
EIOTY
We asked you to add the red letters to the table, under the musicians' names – this was the upshot:
Mick Grabham |
Alan Cartwright |
Pete Solley |
Mark Brzezicki |
Matt Pegg |
Geoff Dunn |
Dave Bronze |
Josh Phillips |
Matthew Fisher |
Geoff Whitehorn |
Dave Ball |
BJ Wilson |
Dave Knights |
Robin Trower |
Chris Copping |
MPRST | AEHIO | EINPR | BEGKN | EFILN | INOST | GHNWR | ABEKO | DFLOR | FHIPR | ABCOS | ANRST | EGIMR | EIOTY | ELNRS |
Next step: we were looking for a string of words associated with Procol Harum: maybe a song-title, the name of an album, or one of the musicians. You had to find it by taking one of the red letters from each column, in order.
We offered an example, using the green letters below:
|
So ... all you had to do using the red letters above was find the Procol-oriented phrase threaded among the letters, and send us the last word of the phrase (in the case of our green-letter example above, you'd send 'Failure').
Mick Grabham |
Alan Cartwright |
Pete Solley |
Mark Brzezicki |
Matt Pegg |
Geoff Dunn |
Dave Bronze |
Josh Phillips |
Matthew Fisher |
Geoff Whitehorn |
Dave Ball |
BJ Wilson |
Dave Knights |
Robin Trower |
Chris Copping |
MPRST | AEHIO | EINPR | BEGKN | EFILN | INOST | GHNWR | ABEKO | DFLOR | FHIPR | ABCOS | ANRST | EGIMR | EIOTY | ELNRS |
Click here to send us the one-word answer as explained above. The competition ended at 23:59 GMT on
Thursday 24 September 2009.
The puzzle was so easy that all responses bar two were correct (they were
'Dreamer' and 'Hearts' ... But for Song For a Dreamer and The King of
Hearts Dave Ball would have to have supplied an 'E'.
As one competitor remarked, 'Congratulations on another sly competition! It is easy to be led astray here …' And we specially enjoyed one answer, which added:
This was truly delicious! I liked the red herrings you sprinkled so saltily throughout ... At least four possible answers were scuppered by the letters associated with Dave Ball (at least I think that's Dave in 11th place ... strange that it should be such a bad photo of someone who was with the band for such a short time, hence very few pictures of him, etc.) whereas the letters assigned to Gary B gave at least 2 good matches. This is getting better and better! Thank you for the fun, and I do hope my name jumps out of the hat! (sorry, Barbara!) |
If your answer was correct (just one word, please!) we put your name in a hat, to conduct the draw during 25 September – and the first name out of that headpiece was Peter Kuppers, to whom we're sending a free All This and More Procol Harum Box Set. Here's Peter's acknowledgment of receipt, which was much appreciated:
Dear all at BtP, All This And More arrived today. What a beautiful present for someone who is normally a born loser when it comes to lotteries, prize competitions, black jack and other fancy gambling games our world is familiar with. And when, one day, the unexpected occurs, there's nothing nicer than to win something from my / our favorite band (apart, perhaps, from winning EUR 150,000,000 in EuroMillions). Thanks, everybody at BtP and Salvo Records. Thank you, lucky hand that picked my name. And thank you boys, who wrote the music for and played on all these beautiful records. Peter Kuppers |
If you didn't win, thanks for playing, and we hope you enjoyed it –
meanwhile there are still copies of the Box Set
in The BtP Store at
the introductory price, some 30 USD below the Amazon.com price.
The prizes was of course awarded at the absolute discretion of Jens and
Roland, the 'Beyond the Pale' team, whose decision was final; their families
were not eligible to enter.
