The Mojo 100 Epic Rock Tracks

Mojo Magazine April 2004

Mojo Magazine: Heroic, uplifting and over-the-top, the next ten pages are dedicated to tunes that shamelessly embody all three of these admirable values. The rules for inclusion are simple: one entry per band and the notion that the track in question exemplifies musical adventuring at its boldest and, in some cases, most foolish. As Freddie would say, Magnifico-o-o!

1

Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody

2

The Rolling Stones: Sympathy For The Devil

3

Pink Floyd: Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Procol Harum: A Whiter Shade of Pale

Keith Reid's romance from the bottom of a whisky bottle – written after he heard a girl described as having 'turned a whiter shade of pale' at a party – is the original piece of hymnal pop classicism. King Curtis's soulful cover set the mood for Withnail And I. And the fact that the original was used on Diana Moran's Keep Fit With The Green Goddess video in no way detracts from its awesome lighter-waving power.
