Two Keith Reid songs

Draw your own conclusions

Gone Too Far
(Trower / Reid)

Into the Flood
(Brooker / Reid / Noble)

Recorded by Truce, 1981

Recorded by Procol Harum, 1991

Tell you how the story stands
I'm a victim in your hands
You got me pleading on bended knee
that's the way the picture reads
it's a horror show
it's a body blow
and it's gone too far

Tell you how the story stands
I'm a victim in your hands
Got me pleading on my bended knees
that's the way the picture reads
It's a horror show
It's a body blow
and it's gone too far

It's a joke at best
it's a bloody mess
and it's gone too far

Tell me a reason
give me sign
somebody somewhere
throw me a line
Somebody's out there
looking for blood
off with the horses
and on with flood

Tell me a reason
well give me a sign
somebody somewhere
throw me a line
somebody down there
looking for blood
Off with the horses
into the flood

Now you've made a big mistake
spoiled the icing on the wedding cake
killed the goose that laid the golden egg
This time babe you're going to have to beg

it's a crying shame
it's a dying flame
and it's gone too far
it's the final straw
it's the fatal flaw
and it's gone too far

it's a crying shame
it's a dying flame
and it's gone too far

Now you've made your big mistake
spoiled the icing on the cake
you killed the goose that killed the golden egg
'fraid you're gonna have to beg
it's ...

NB also: click the picture below to hear a 30-second excerpt from Tabaluga and the Magic Jadestone (words by Chris Thompson and Keith Reid): three lines in common with Into the Flood / Gone too Far

The song is entitled One Step at a Time
and the music is by Kravetz / Maffay

Tell me a reason
give me a sign
somebody somewhere
throw me a line
somebody down there
looking for blood
Off with the horses
yeah, into the flood

So you pulled the perfect crime
turned the water into wine

got me on my bended knees
Now's the time to make me squeeze

Came in from the freezing cold
Turned the glitter into gold
(from the Barbican)

It's a bloody mess
it's a body-blow
and it's gone too far

NB: Gary Brooker told BtP (5 August 2004) that he had not been aware of the Trower/Reid song above until he heard the version of Gone Too Far by Wymeswold Plynth on the second Palers' Project 2CD album, From Shadow to Shadow. He nonetheless jokingly mentioned that Procol Harum's recently débuted song Victims of the Fury, which also exists in a prior Trower/Reid setting, was his 'revenge' for Gone Too Far / Into the Flood.
