Procol Harum : The Daddy Long-Legs Concert

Bonjour to you all,

Tomorrow will be the one week-anniversary of this fabulous week-end ! It brought so much happiness that it's going to keep me warm for a long long time, and so much emotion that I'll have tears in my eyes whenever I'll think about it as well ...

C’était seulement mon deuxième concert de Procol… incroyable, non ? (l’autre, c’était le 13.02.92 à Paris). Et alors donc, j’ai découvert la magie de la musique de Procol Harum par les albums studio, pour m’apercevoir plus tard qu’en concert , elle prend encore une autre dimension, encore plus extraordinaire…

Can you believe it was only my second Procol Harum concert ? Last time, it was for the Prodigal Stranger tour, in Paris, on 13.02.92. So I
discovered Procol magic through studio albums and found out only later how even more extraordinary it was live.

Alors dimanche soir, j’ai vécu un peu comme dans un rêve, mais en beaucoup mieux, bien sûr, puisqu’il n’y a pas eu de douloureux réveil !

So last Sunday, it was like in a dream, only much better because it was real!

Avant de parler du concert, deux mots sur le sound-check sur Bringing Home the Bacon qui a laissé présager le meilleur : quelle énergie, quel enthousiasme, et pas seulement grace aux DEUX guitaristes, Mick Grabham et Geoff Whitehorn – excusez du peu. Mais surtout ce qui m’a frappé, c’est, dès les premières notes, c’est le visage de Gary, avec cette sorte de sourire incontrôlable qu’on ne peut parfois pas s’empêcher d’afficher… et qui, à mon avis de fan transie, montrait le bonheur de Gary d’être sur scène pour jouer sa musique.

Before talking about the concert, a few words about the soundcheck, done on Bringing Home the Bacon, which was a good omen, a lot of energy and enthusiasm there on stage, and not only because there were TWO lead guitarists (Mick Grabham, and - surprise - Geoff Whitehorn), But what struck me most, right at the first notes, was Gary's face. He had that special kind of smile you have in spite of yourself, when you can't help it because you're happy. and I'm convinced Gary was really happy to be on stage and play his music that night.

Alors donc le concert : 17 morceaux joués d’affilée, soit par le groupe rock seulement, soit avec l’orchestre et chœur. Là, j’avais un peu peur, mais finalement, – même si je préfère toujours PH tout seul - ça s’est très bien passé. En particulier pour une splendide version de Homburg, superbement arrangée pour l’occasion, comme un certain nombre de morceaux joués ce soir.

So the concert : 17 songs played with no break either with the 'small band' or with the 'big band' as Gary explained. I was not too sure about the
orchestra part, but really, and even if I still prefer Procol on their own, it as great, especially for a brilliant version of Homburg, wonderfully
arranged for the occasion as were a few number of the songs played that night.

Par exemple A Salty Dog que, là, j’aurais préféré un peu plus brut de décoffrage, sans chœurs et sans autant d’orchestre qui adoucissent trop ce morceau exceptionnel, sûrement mon favori.

For example A Salty Dog that in that case I would have preferred a bit rougher without the choir and without such a big orchestra which soften too much this exceptional song, surely my favourite.

Et puisqu’on est dans les versions nouvelles, passons donc au traitement de AWSOP. Ce fut un grand grand moment : on a eu droit, petits veinards, aux quatre couplets – c’est une première, non ? – avec un quarté dans le désordre 4-1-3-2. Et pour l’arrangement musical, c’était tout en finesse et légèreté, comme un de ces desserts qu’on mange à l’Hôtel Grande.

Since I'm talking about re-arrangement, we had that version of AWSoP, one great moment of the concert. Behold, we got the 4 verses - isn't a first ? ? - in disorder (4-1-3-2) and a fine musical arrangement, all in lightness and 'finesse' like one of the desserts you eat at Hotel Grand.

A propos, on y a eu droit, ouf, à Grand Hotel, dans une version plutôt sobre – j’en connais qui n’hésite pas à iclure Mabel au milieu, et ça sonne plutôt bien … Mais je m’égare…

Grand Hotel, of course they did it. it was a rather sober version - I know some people who do not hesitate to spice it up by including Mabel in the middle of it, and it does sound pretty good. But I digress.

Parmi les agréables surprises, il y a eu Cerdes (Outside the gates of) que j’étais curieurse d’entendre live, et est-il utile de le préciser je n’ai pas été déçue… Autre moment de pur bonheur avec Beyond The Pale, dédié ce soir-là à qui-vous-savez… Un bijou avec des paroles parfaites, une musique parfaite… Dimanche, je n’aurais rien eu contre un petit allongenent ou un petit bis repetita. Et à propos d’appétit, j’aurais bien voulu entendre As Strong As Samson, Barnyard Story et Broken Barricades… pour A Rum Tale, on avait été (bien) servi la veille, en petit comité …

It was quite a pleasant surprise to hear Cerdes (Outside the gates of) that I was curious to hear live. Needless to say I was not disappointed ! Another moment of sheer happiness was during Beyond The Pale, dedicated that night to 'you-know-who', what a great song, perfect words, perfect music. if only it could last a bit longer, or if they could have played it twice. Of course we always ask for more, and in my case I would have love to hear As Strong As Samson, Barnyard Story and Broken Barricades, normally I would also expect A Rum Tale, but for this jewel, we had a special version of it the night before, played by Gary only, which had suited me perfectly.

Bon, je ne suis pas prête d’oublier non plus Shine On Brightly, Holding On, New Lamps for Old, Repent Walpurgis, Piggy Pig Pig (et je m’arrête ici pour ne pas citer toute la set-list).

Right, I am not about to forget either Shine On Brightly, Holding On, New Lamps for Old, Repent Walpurgis, Piggy Pig Pig - and I stop here because I'll end up mentioning the whole set-list.

Mais avant de finir, je voudrais encore mentionner Pandora’s Box. Ca décoiffe ! et les musiciens ont l’air de vraiment prendre leur pied, le public aussi ! D’ailleurs pendant tout le concert, le groupe avait l’air content, heureux d’être là et de jouer ensemble (à part Mathew Fisher qui n’a souri que tout à la fin, avant de quitter la scène), et il régnait tant du coté du groupe et de celui du public une atmosphère de bonheur et d’émotion qu’on est pas prêts d’oublier … Il n’y a que Procol capable de ça …

Before finishing I'd like to talk about Pandora's Box, another of my numerous favorite moment of the concert. The musicians seemed to enjoy
themselves enormously, and so did the audience ! In fact during the whole concert, the band was looking very relaxed and happy to play together - with the exception of Matthew Fisher who did not smile at all except at the very end of the concert. There was, as much on the stage side as on the public side, an atmosphere of happiness and emotion that we are not about to forget. That is why Procol Harum is unique, no other group has that power.
