Ce dimanche 7 juin 1998, Gryon, paisible station familiale des Alpes vaudoises, qui côtoie celle plus célèbre de Villars, connaît ce matin une animation particulière: après un défilé dans le village, onze fanfares se rassemblent devant la salle de spectacles pour interpréter la nouvelle oeuvre de Gary Brooker: le 'Bourdon des Alpes '.

Sunday 7 June 1998, Gryon: this peaceful Alpine family resort in the Swiss Vaud, adjoining the better-known resort of Villars, is unusually lively this morning. Following a march through the village, eleven brass bands get together in front of the theatre for a rendering of Gary Brooker's new work, Le Bourdon des Alpes.

En fait, il y a déjà eu une interprétation très applaudie la veille au soir, lors du bal, par une fanfare de semi-professionnels. L’intérêt de cette 'grande première 'est naturellemment le nombre de musiciens rassemblés, environ 300 d’après mon estimation, dont la majorité sont des amateurs, adultes et enfants.

In fact there had been a very well-received rendering before yesterday evening's ball, by a semi-professional brass band. But the interest of this 'grande première' is, naturally enough, the number of musicians taking part – some three hundred by my reckoning, the majority of whom are amateurs, both children and adults.

Gary et Franky sont arrivés en voisins, souriants et saluant de nombreux amis présents, ainsi qu’un fan’s club réduit mais sincère: Antonio, d’Italie, Fritz, de Munich, et moi-même. Gary est légèrement inquiet en préparant son enregistreur DAT: il craint que le tempo soit trop lent (on est en Suisse!).

So there are Gary and Franky, smiling and greeting numerous friends, and a small yet devoted fan-club: Antonio from Italy, Fritz from Munich and myself. Gary, setting up his DAT recorder, seems mildly nervous that the piece will be taken too slowly – after all, we're in Switzerland!

A 11h30, alors que le soleil jusque-là timide se dévoile, un bon demi-millier d’auditeurs se préparent à écouter quelques discours et le Bourdon tant attendu. Le maire de Gryon signale que 'M. Gary Brooker, compositeur du morceau bien connu qui a fait danser tant de jeunes couples des années '70, nous a fait l’amabilité de composer cette pièce pour fanfare et se trouve quelque part dans la foule... '.

At 11.30, just as a hitherto-timid sun came out of hiding, a good five-hundred listeners got ready for a few speeches and the much-awaited Bourdon. The Gryon mayor indicates that 'Mr Gary Brooker, composer of the well-known piece that set so many young couples dancing in the seventies [!], has done us the favour of composing this brass-band piece, and is somewhere in the crowd ... '

Un roulement de tambour, et le Bourdon des Alpes s’envole ... Etonnant morceau composé sans l’apport du piano: sa mélodie principale est envoyée par des trompettes, la mélodie de soutien par des trombones et les basses par des tubas. On reconnait des harmonies, des émotions musicales et une structure très brookérienne, avec changements de tonalité et de tempo, avec des piannissimi et fortissimi, et une finale sonnante! C’est vrai qu’à première écoute, en cette veille du Mundial de football, le Bourdon fait un peu 'hymne national '... il pourrait devenir l’hymne mondial des Procoliens!

A drum-roll, and Le Bourdon des Alpes launches itself ... an astonishing piece, composed without the aid of the piano; its principal melody is carried by trumpets, its counterpoint by trombones, its bass-line by tubas. We recognise certain harmonies, musical emotions and a thoroughly Brookeresque structure, with shifts of tonality and tempo, pianissimi and fortissimi, and a resounding finale. On first hearing, on this eve of the World Cup, the Bourdon has a touch of national anthem about it: it could well become the Procoholics' global anthem in fact!

4 minutes et quelques secondes... sous les applaudissements de la foule, Gary arrête son DAT et me souffle: 'La fin était trop lente, et 2 ou 3 musiciens n’étaient pas dans le coup! Hier soir, j’ai trouvé l’interprétation plus musclée'.

Four minutes and a few seconds ... under cover of the crowd's applause Gary shuts off his DAT machine and whispers to me that 'the end was too slow, and a handful of players were not on the ball. I found last night's performance stronger.'
 

Autour d’une bière à la buvette, Antonio et moi questionnons Gary (Mr. One Day) sur quelques projets futurs: écrit-il? 'Yes '; Procol va-t-il enregistrer? 'One Day '; Procol va-t-il repartir en tournée? 'One Day After!'. Ce qui semble sûr, c’est que Gary et Keith vont se rencontrer cet été... Attention, les dates communiquées par Michael Ackermann aux Whalers (tournée avec le Ringo All Stars) ne sont pas confirmées! Gary espère être averti avant chaque concert!

Over a beer in the bar, Antonio and I question 'Mr One Day' about future projects. Is he writing? 'Yes.' Will Procol record again? 'One day.' Will Procol tour again? 'One day after!'. What seems certain is that Gary and Keith will be getting together in the summer. And – beware! – the Ringo All-Starr tour-dates that Michael Ackermann gave the Whalers aren't confirmed! Gary is hoping to be put in the picture before each concert!

A tous ceux qui ont aimé la réédition de 'No More Fear From Flying 'avec 2 inédits, Gary promet que la réédition de 'Lead Me To The Water ', avec Reprise, devrait aussi donner le jour à une ou deux perles.... alors, soyez patients!

If you liked the two bonus tracks on the re-issued No More Fear of Flying, Gary promises that further pearls will see the light of day when Lead me to the Water is re-released on Repertoire ... so be patient!

Pour finir, une anecdote: savez-vous que 'A Salty Dog 'est né en Suisse? Les trains suisses, quand ils sifflent, émettent une sorte de double 'beep-beep '. Gary, assis à son piano, a entendu siffler un tel train et a laisser courir ses mains sur le piano.... et le train est devenu le bateau que l’on connaît!

And to wind up, a little story: did you know that A Salty Dog was born in Switzerland? Swiss trains whistle with a kind of double 'beep-beep' and Gary heard one while sitting at his piano: he let his hands roam over the keyboard ... and that train turned into the ship that we know so well! 'Beyond the Pale' is most grateful to Martin Clare for elucidating the title, Le Bourdon des Alpes: bourdon is not only a musical drone as of bagpipes (as Gary explained here) but also, procoholically enough, a pilgrim's staff. Thus the title of the piece might equally be 'Drone of the Alps' or 'Alpine Walking-Stick'. Meanwhile a bourdon is also a bumble-bee – hence the 'take-off' pun in François's title above. Lastly, according to Christelle Iskander Joux, there's also a (surely inappropriate) slang connotation to bourdon: track five of A Salty Dog is your clue here. Further interpretations are warmly invited ...
