How to play

There are ten questions in this competition, which looks at the words of Gary Brooker's Lead Me to the Water solo album. Brooker wrote all the songs himself, for the first and only time relying on no verbal collaborator, and they repay close attention. You'll find all the song words here, and in case of doubt that page contains the texts we are referring to in the questions. All you need to do each day is carefully read the words – while discovering the answer to a simple question – which will greatly enrich your enjoyment of this excellent album.

As ten instalments of the puzzle unfold, keep a note of each daily answer, and in the last dose there will be a simple operation to follow, telling you what to do to win – then you send your entry by e-mail to BtP as fast as possible. If you're the first in, chronologically speaking, you win the five albums kindly donated by Esoteric and Cherry Red records. All subsequent correct entries will go into the BtP Homburg, and the remaining four winners (who also get the five albums) will be drawn from that by a suitably Glamorous Assistant, deo volente.

As always, the ultimate answer you send to 'Beyond the Pale' will be something very uncomplicated. Over the past years we've had one or two non-winners who claimed, 'You guys tricked me …' so here's fair warning … just read the final instruction carefully!
