Robin Trower LIVE

William Howard, 'Boston Globe', 9 April 1976

ROCK – I don't generally like 'in concert' albums but Robin Trower LIVE (Chrysalis) is the best one I've heard in years. When I interviewed the former Procol Harum guitarist last April, it was a struggle to get the lanky Briton to talk about anything else but this project.

His enthusiasm was genuine. The concert was recorded in Stockholm 14 months ago by the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation and, according to Trower, it wasn't until several weeks later that he listened to the tape with drummer Bill Lordan and bassist / vocalist Jimmy Dewar. Without any prior planning, rock's foremost power trio had a dazzling live set in the can.

Don't be put off by the fact that the selections have already appeared on Trower's studio albums because each cut here comes across sounding refreshingly spontaneous, so much so that Trower might consider releasing a live set of previously unrecorded material. His ethereal style is uniquely suited to the freedom of the concert stage
