The Prodigal Stranger: session pictures

A note on Gary's keyboard

On our first, excellent page of pictures of the Prodigal Stranger sessions, we asked if anyone could identify the Brooker keyboard as shown in these two photographs. Now read on ...

Canadian Paler George Bertok wrote to BtP in January 2005 to inform us that '... the keyboard GB is playing is an Ensoniq Mirage, probably the first affordable sampler to appear [I own 2 of them].  In around 1980 a Mirage cost $2000 CDN ... now a pawn-shop item worth $0 - $150. To put things in perspective, Casio now makes an 88-key, piano-feel Digital Piano that sounds great, for $600 CDN ! The Mirage has many lo-fi, but very musically useful samples within, & has served me well for many a year...Here's a pic of one of mine...'

Doubtless this is the instrument that has been admired worldwide on George's reinterpretation of The Worm and the Tree!
