Procol Harum

Much has been made of the similarities between some of Keith Reid's early songs and the looking-glass world of Lewis Carroll in the Alice books. Bert Saraco (of Bert and Carina) now writes to BtP about a Procol / Tolkien link, relating to a hitherto-unconsidered a pair of artists who apparently number Procol Harum among their inspirations. The images on this page are from their 1976 Calendar: perhaps the same zeitgeist was helping to incubate The Worm and the Tree ... certainly Chris Copping, on this page, felt that suite was 'Tolkien-like'.
From Greg and Tim Hildebrandt
- The Tolkien Years
This fine table-top trade paperback full-color art book features the art of the Hildebrandt brothers, from sketches and photo studies to finished paintings. As you probably can figure out by the title, it concentrates on the brothers' work on Tolkien's Hobbit books. The text is by Greg Hildebrandt, who talks, among other things, about what he and his brother would do for inspiration: |

" ...I pushed open the red
barn door and climbed up the stairs. I quickly moved across the cluttered
floor.
"An album was spinning on the old record player. The sounds of Procol Harum drifted from the two speakers. A painting of a forest rested on the long wooden easel..." I always thought A Robe of Silk sounded like a Hildebrandt painting - does that make any sense? |
