Whaler Hans Volkhardt writes to BtP with two nice stage photographs: "On 6 June 1976 Procol Harum gave a concert in Offenburg, Germany, at an open-air festival. Besides Procol there were other bands such as War, Bob Marley, Alvin Lee, Man, Wishbone Ash and others. I took these two photos: I was there with two friends. When PH was playing, we went directly in front of the stage. It was my first concert with Procol!" Left: Gary Brooker at a nice shiny grand, with towel on his piano-stool, announces a number. Note the stretch of garden fence in front of the stage! |

A most interesting picture. At the back, new boy Pete Solley adjusts some piece of kit: you can see his miked Leslie, but the synth and the unfamiliar organ are a real departure. Also notable is the music-stand with a score propped up - unsurprising at such an early stage in his tenure of the organ-bench. Mick Grabham is playing a Strat, his guitar of choice at this epoch, though his more familiar Les Paul is propped up to the left of the picture; a third guitar, presumably also a Strat, lurks behind the monitor. Chris Copping addresses his bass with characteristic vigour. BJ is typically all-but invisible behind the kit, backed by the mighty tam-tam. Thanks, Hans! |
