Procol Harum at Jazz Bilzen, 1967 (1)
Most interesting (writes Larry Pennisi) aside from the antiquity of the footage and the fact that they are playing in "costume", is the positioning of David Knights and Robin Trower. Both are at the extreme sides of the stage where Gary and Matthew would normally be. Additionally, this footage, though live, seems to have music superimposed from another performance since what's being played and what is seen does not always sync up. 1967 gold!
The subtitle doesn't vouchsafe that this was the first-ever public show by the classic line-up from the first three albums
A boot and some piano-legs
Gary in a remarkable hat
The bassist, behind the pianist
Piano by Richard Lipp, a classic Viennese maker
Glimpses of Procol Harum: the crowd presses close
Not contact mics on this piano!
Where are these fans looking, exactly?
Youthful features of the Commander
Thanks to Larry Pennisi, Marvin Chassman,
Ted McCallion
