Procol Harum, chorus and orchestra

1972 images from Fritz Friedl

Paler Fritz Friedl took these excellent concert-photos – they seem to cover every angle – in October 1972  when Procol Harum played Munich with the Munich Symphonic Orchestra and the Toelzer Boy-Choir.

Alan Cartwright is the only player Fritz didn't manage to capture: though he didn't realize for quite a while that the sound-desk picture included Keith Reid, who is not usually captured in fans' pictures.

More about PH orchestral gigs may be read here, and some related pictures (same stage-clothes even!) are on show here. Click on the pictures for some lateral surfing to related corners of 'Beyond the Pale' …

Chris Michie writes to BtP (13 December 2000):
That appears to be a young and hirsute Chris Thomas at the board. In fact, there appear to be two boards, which would make sense if there was an orchestra and choir. For October 1972 they look pretty damn sophisticated for live sound boards, so my best guess is that they are broadcast or mobile recording consoles that the Germans must have provided. The intercom mics on goosenecks would be appropriate for such boards, but wouldn't have much purpose on a live sound board, though in 1972 not too many people were making live sound boards so the requirements were a bit nebulous.
