Procol : Souvenir of Paris

Keith Reid, l’homme qui écrit les textes du groupe, était assis à l’une des tables du salon. Il écrivait des cartes postales. Souvenir of Paris. Gary Brooker, sur un large divan de velours, rallume sa pipe de bruyère pour la troisième fois de l’après-midi. Et lorsque je lui ai posé ma première question, il arrêta son geste, leva les yeux avec un air dubitatif et se brûla les doigts. Fires (Which Burnt Brightly). Mais déjà, de quel hôtel s’agissait-il ?

Keith Reid, the man responsible for the lyrics of the group, is sitting at one of the coffee-tables. He is writing post-cards. Souvenir of Paris. Gary Brooker, on a large velvet sofa, is lighting his briar pipe for the third time in the afternoon. And when I asked him my first question, he stopped, raised the eyes with a doubtful air, and burnt his fingers. Fires (Which Burnt Brightly). But, by the way, which hotel was it ?

Procol Harum est un groupe reclu, vous n’avez pratiquement aucun contact avec l’extérieur. Je veux dire, professionnellement.

Procol Harum is a reclusive group, you have practically no contact with the outside world, I mean professionally speaking.

Gary Brooker
Oui, sans doute. Faut-il nous en blâmer ? Nous sommes d’étranges garçons et n’aimons peu frayer avec le show-business. C’est une attitude auto-protectrice.

Yes, probably. Should we be blamed for it ? We are strange boys and we don’t like very much to deal with the show-business world. It is a self-protective attitude.

Something Magic est votre nouvel album, et pour la première fois vous en êtes les producteurs. De quelle façon cela s’est-il déroulé ?

Something Magic is your new album, and for the first time you are producing it yourselves. How did that happen?

Something Magic a été enregistré à Miami dans le studio utilisé au préalable par les Bee Gees et les Eagles. Il comprend 5 titres, 4 figurent sur la première face et la seconde est entièrement occupée par une longue suite que j’ai composée et à laquelle Keith fournit une histoire. Il avait écrit cette fable depuis très longtemps, en fait, deux ans au moins. Le morceau achevé devait être enregistré avec un orchestre symphonique mais comme nous étions les producteurs de l’album, l’entreprise nous parut hasardeuse. Le reste est du matériel totalement neuf.

Something Magic has been recorded in Miami in the studio previously used by the Bee Gees and the Eagles. There are five [sic!] titles, four of which are on the first side, the second side being entirely taken by a long suite that I wrote and for which Keith supplied a story. He wrote this tale a very long time ago, two years ago actually. Once finished, this piece of music was meant to be recorded with a symphony orchestra, but as we were the producers of the album, we found the project a bit hazardous. The rest of the album is made of entirely new stuff.

Cette longue suite The Worm and the Tree marque le retour d’un Procol Harum redevenu ambitieux, comme à l’époque de Held 'Twas In I sur Shine On Brightly.

This long suite The Worm and the Tree signals the return of a more ambitious Procol, as in the times of Held 'Twas In I on the Shine On Brightly album.

La comparaison n’est pas souhaitable, avec Held 'Twas In I nous ne savions réellement pas où nous allions. La progression s’est faite d’elle-même, sans direction pré-établie, ici l’histoire était déjà écrite, en somme il y avait des repères et en composant, je n’ai fait que les suivre.

This comparison is not desirable. With Held 'Twas In I we didn't really know where we were going. The progression went by itself, with no planned directions. Here, the story was already written, there were reference marks, and all I had to do was to follow them while I was composing the music.

Il y a toute une symbolique dans cette histoire et pas uniquement au niveau du texte, mais chaque séquence musicale est appropriée aux évènements qui la jalonnent.

This story is full of symbols, and not only at the text level, but each musical sequence fits the events that mark them out.

C’est le complément d’émotion. Et c’est en effet assez sensible sur ce morceau parce qu’inhabituellement le texte n’est pas chanté mais récité. Il y a deux choses séparées, le texte et la musique, l’un complète l’autre, sans qu’il y ait véritablement osmose.

It is the emotional adjunct. And, yes, it is quite perceptible in this song because, unusually, the lyrics are not sung but spoken. There are two things, the words and the music, one completes the other, but with no true osmosis.

Quelles sont les raisons qui vous ont poussé à produire vous-mêmes cet album ?

What are the reasons that made you produce yourself this album ?

Nous pouvions, pour une fois, exploiter profondément nos idées. Nous n’étions pas tenus de respecter celles du producteur.

We wanted, for once, to make the most of our ideas without the obligation to follow the producer’s.

Lorsque sur scène vous jouez Be Bop a Lula suivi de L'Adagio d’Albinoni, on a affaire à une grosse tranche d’ironie, n’est-ce-pas ?

On stage, when you play Be Bop A Lula, followed by Albinoni’s Adagio, one has to see that as a bit of irony ?

C’est une prise directe avec la vie. Ce n’est pas un gag, c’est amusant … avec un certain recul.

It is an instant picture of life. It is not a joke, it’s funny… from a certain distance.

De toutes vos compositions, quelle est votre préférée ?

Of all the songs you wrote, which one is your favourite ?
