'Echoes in the Night', Wuppertal, Germany

Ian Hockley's setlist • 3 April 2013

As well as playing and singing with the Palers' Band, Ian Hockley – an organist by profession – gave an excellent public solo recital on two organs (of markedly different character) at the Laurentiuskirche, Wuppertal, close by the Palers' Basecamp hotel. It was not a warm evening, but a good contingent of public and Procol fans listened with rapt attention to Ian's skilful and moving presentation. Below, links to YouTube films of two pieces (thanks to Don Milione)

Played on the large West End Seiffert Organ (1963)

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor BWV 565 JS Bach (1685–1750)

Chorale Prelude "Wachet Auf! ruft uns die Stimme" (Sleepers Wake) BWV 645 JS Bach

Four Sketches Robert Schumann (1810–1856
i) C minor ii) C Major iii) F Minor iv) D flat Major

Played on the Historic Teichmann Organ (1767)

Prelude in C major (from "The Well Tempered Klavier") JS Bach
Sonata in C minor Giovanni Battista Pescetti (c.1704–1766)

Played on the Large Seiffert Organ

The Thin End of the Wedge Gary Brooker (1945–)
(YouTube film here)

Toccata in F Major (from "Fifth Symphony") Charles-Marie Widor (1844–1937)
(YouTube film here)

Encore
Weisselklenzenacht Matthew Fisher (1946–)

As well as the two overtly Procoloid pieces, much of the above repertoire bore relation to well-known Harum pieces, which of course made the selection specially welcome to the particular audience.

Pictured: Maestro Hockley keeps his fingers warm in the Seiffert Organ loft before the recital. Note the Spanish trumpets behind him!
