Procol Harum will play with the Delaware
Symphony Orchestra and OperaDelaware Chorus The 2010 Annual Grand Gala on Saturday 4 December 2010 at 8pm will feature 'a collaborative performance' by Procol Harum and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra Access details are here; booking is here (don't pay any attention to the 'unavailable' notice here) Opened in 1871 as a home for the Grand Lodge of the Masons, The Grand has played host to thousands of renowned entertainers and performing artists over the years. Designed by Delaware architect Thomas Dixon in the Second Empire style, The Grand features a distinctive façade of cast iron adorned with Masonic images. In 1909 it was briefly converted into a regular stop on the vaudeville circuit, then mutated into a movie theatre, before falling into decline closing its doors in 1967. On 22 December 1971, however, the hundredth anniversary of its original grand opening saw The Grand Opera House again packed with people as plans were unveiled to renovate it. Rededicated on 1 February 1973 (an auspicious date) it began again to present the finest performing artists from around the world The Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, and First State Ballet Theatre are all in residence at The Grand. |
