Due to the closing of Chiddingfold Club it had been three years since ‘No Stiletto Shoes’ under the leadership of Gary Brooker had organised their Xmas charity music night.
The venue chosen was Kenney Jones’s Hurtwood Polo Club in SW Surrey on 10 December 2010, and thanks to Jane Jones and her staff for preparing the evening. Thank you to Franky Brooker who put the whole project together – the usual outfit of Gary (piano and vocals), Andy Fairweather Low (guitar and vocals), Frank Mead (saxes and harmonica), Dave Bronze (bass), and new boy Paul Beavis on drums. Paul has been playing with Andy on his solo tours and was a welcome addition of rhythmic and visual ‘new blood’. Regulars said the band sounded better than ever! Thanks go to Richard Sharpe, local guitar hero, for a great guest appearance.
The Club was packed, a great evening had by all, and we raised £4,800 which was presented to Prof David Cunningham at the Royal Marsden Hospital for Cancer Research on 31 January. He was “absolutely delighted” (see illustration). A big thank you to the crew and friends who helped distribute tickets and to Shirley and Colin Wragg and Anne and Paul Lawrence for doing the raffle and the door.
Finally, thank you to everybody’s generosity which made a really fantastic night!
Let’s hope we can do it again.
