The speaker is the leader of Procol Harum, back again with the album The Well’s On Fire after eleven years of silence. "I grew up with Frankie Miller, Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood, people who learned on stage and haven’t lost their talent."

Gary Brooker non sembra un tranquillo signore di cinquantotto anni. Il suo sguardo dice che il tempo dei Procol Harum non e ancora finito. Il 3 marzo e uscito in tutto il mondo The Well's On Fire, primo album da undici anni a questa parte. Un disco che non strizza l'occhio a improbabili operazioni nostalgia. Lui, Brooker, non si sente un nostalgico. "Il passato e andato e non mi interessa - dice un po' piccato -. Mi fa sorridere quando leggo di colleghi che si sentono sopravvissuti. Io non lo sono. Faccio il musicista. Punto".

Gary Brooker doesn’t seem like a tranquil gentleman of 58. His look says that Procol Harum’s time is not yet over. 3 March saw the world-wide release of The Well’s On Fire, their first album for eleven years, and an album which doesn’t demand improbable feats of nostalgia. He, Brooker, doesn’t see himself as a nostalgic. "The past is gone and doesn’t interest me," he says, slightly piqued. "It makes me smile when I read of colleagues who regard themselves as survivors. I’m not one. I’m a musician. Full stop."

Al suo fianco, per questo ritorno discografico, il fido autore Keith Reid e l'organista storico Matthew Fisher, ma anche Mark Brzezicki, Matt Pegg e Geoff Whitehorn. Con loro Brooker affrontera un lungo tour europeo in primavera. L'Italia, gia visitata un paio di mesi fa, sembra al momento esclusa dai programmi del gruppo.

At his side, for this return to recording, the faithful writer Keith Reid and the original organist Matthew Fisher, but also Mark Brzezicki, Matt Pegg, and Geoff Whitehorn. With them Brooker will embark upon a long European tour in the spring. Italy, already visited a few months ago, doesn’t at present seem to feature in the band’s plans.

The Prodigal Stranger e uscito nel 1991: che avete fatto in undici anni?

Abbiamo suonato, che altro? Quel disco e stato mal promosso, mal lavorato dalla compagnia. E' stata un'esperienza deprimente vedere il tuo prodotto stampato e dimenticato dalla casa discografica. Cosi, nauseati dall'industria, abbiamo deciso di proseguire solo suonando dal vivo. Gli anni Novanta sono stati un'era desolante. Ma l'abbiamo superata.

The Prodigal Stranger came out in 1991; what have you done in eleven years?

We’ve played, what else? That record was badly promoted, badly handled by the company. It was a depressing experience seeing your work produced and then forgotten by the record company. So, fed up with the industry, we decided to carry on just playing live. The Nineties were a dreary time. But we got over it.

Che cosa vi ha fatto cambiare idea?

The Well's On Fire e nato dalla voglia di tornare in studio. E' stato semplice come ai vecchi tempi. In quattro settimane e mezzo abbiamo registrato tutte le canzoni. Sapevamo quello che volevamo fare. E' stato molto naturale, non premeditato, una buona fotografia di quello che siamo oggi. Abbiamo saputo attendere l'opportunita giusta suonando al nostro meglio. I Procol Harum non sono una pop band alla ricerca del singolo di successo da mandare in classifica. Siamo un gruppo che sa suonare soul e blues e li mescola con altre influenze musicali. Non esiste una formula.

What made you change your minds?

The Well’s On Fire was born out of a wish to return to the studio. It was as easy as in the old days. In four-and-a-half weeks we recorded all the songs. We knew what we wanted to do. It was very natural, not premeditated, a good snapshot of what we are today. We could wait for the right opportunity, playing our best. Procol Harum aren’t a pop band looking for a single to do well in the charts. We’re a group that can play soul and blues, and mix them with other musical influences. There’s no formula.

E' la cifra stilistica di The Well's On Fire?

Non si tratta di un concept album, ma di canzoni scritte con lo spirito dei Procol Harum: le abbiamo suonate e le abbiamo orchestrate senza inseguire mode o il mito di A Whiter Shade Of Pale. Non siamo mai stati il gruppo che si siede sugli allori e abbiamo sperimentato solo quello che ci sembrava a fuoco con il progetto artistico.

And the musical signature of The Well’s On Fire?

It isn’t a question of a concept album, but rather of songs written with the spirit of Procol Harum; we played them and arranged them without chasing after fashions or the legend of A Whiter Shade of Pale. We’ve never been a group that rests on its laurels and we only tried what seemed to us to fit in with the artistic project.

Siete stati il gruppo guida di una generazione?

Credo che abbiamo influenzato un bel po' di musicisti, dai Genesis ai Queen. E anche il Pete Townshend di Tommy ci deve qualcosa. Ma non abbiamo avuto imitatori, per fortuna.

Was the group a guide for a generation?

I think we influenced a fair few musicians, from Genesis to Queen. And even the Pete Townshend of Tommy owes us something. But we haven’t had imitators, thank goodness.

Perche cosi tanti gruppi della sua generazione si riformano?

Forse perche quelle persone avevano talento e non l'hanno perso negli anni. La mia generazione ha imparato a suonare su un palco. Lo studio d'incisione e arrivato dopo. Oggi spesso avviene il contrario. Io sono cresciuto con amici e colleghi come Frankie Miller, Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood. Abbiamo respirato la stessa aria, la stessa musica, le stesse sensazioni: dagli Hollies ai Beatles. E mi sembra logico non voler abbandonare una cosa che si fa bene. Suonare e un lavoro, non l'anticamera di una fabbrica di divi.

Why are so many groups of your generation re-forming?

Perhaps because those people had talent, and haven’t lost it over the years. My generation learnt to play on stage; the recording studio came afterwards. Now it often happens the other way around. I grew up with friends and colleagues like Frankie Miller, Eric Clapton, Stevie Winwood. We breathed the same air, the same music, the same sensations; from the Hollies to the Beatles. And it seems logical to me not to want to abandon something you do well. Playing music is a job, not the waiting-room to a star-making factory.

Quanto ha cambiato la vostra vita A Whiter Shade Of Pale?

Non molto, mi creda. Ci ha aperto le porte, ma ha aiutato soprattutto altri gruppi. In America non e stato neppure un gran successo.

How much did A Whiter Shade of Pale change your life?

Not much, believe me. It opened doors for us, but above all it helped other bands. In America it wasn’t even a great success.
