Egal, ob sich Ihnen die Bedeutung jemals erschlossen hat, diese Zeilen, zu den Klängen einer Orgel, die getragen eine Bachkantate umspielt, und von einer prägnanten Stimme vorgetragen, haben sich ein für allemal ins Gedächtnis derer eingegraben, die nun die Villa Berg aus allen Nähten platzen lassen.

No matter whether you have ever worked out what they mean, these lines – sung with a restrained voice to the stately sound of an organ playing with a Bach cantata – have forever been graven into the memory of those who filled the Villa Berg to bursting.

A Whiter Shade of Pale, dieses Stück aus dem Jahr 1967, erklingt denn auch als Zugabe eines Konzerts, das die Band Procol Harum mit einer Energie absolviert hat, die nostalgische Gefühle ohne falsche Sentimentalität in die Gegenwart überführt.

A Whiter Shade of Pale, this song from 1967, rings out again as the encore to a concert which Procol Harum have carried off with an energy that brings nostalgic feelings into the present without any false sentimentality.

Vielleicht ist er ja auch heute wieder interessant, jener Stil, der Populäres und Einflüsse der Kunstmusik, Bodenständiges und Komplexes auf so eigenwillige Weise zusammenführt.

Perhaps its time has come again, this style which so wilfully mixes the popular with influences from serious music, the native with the complex.

Der Bassist Matt Pegg war zwar im Jahr 1967 noch gar nicht geboren, und der Gitarrist Geoff Whitehorn war, genauso wie Schlagzeuger Mark Brzezicki, gerade in die Schule gekommen.

True, in 1967 bass-player Matt Pegg had not even been born, while guitarist Geoff Whitehorn and drummer Mark Brzezicki had both [sic] just started school.

Aber zusammen mit dem in edlen Zwirn gekleideten Sänger und Pianisten Gary Brooker sowie mit Matthew Fisher, diesem merkwürdigen Kauz an der Orgel, bilden sie dennoch heute ein homogenes Team.

But together with singer and pianist Gary Brooker, dressed up in his finest, and Matthew Fisher, this strange cove at the organ, they still manage to create a unified team.

Ein paar Tempostücke gleich zu Beginn, mit zwei wunderbar eine Gänsehaut hervorkitzelnden Gitarrensoli, dann eine Kollektion jener Stücke, die zwischen morbider Jahrmarktsmusik, gewagten Akkordprogressionen und dreiviertelgetakteter Schwermut auf delikate Weise mit dem Kitsch spielen: Grand Hotel, Homburg, Worte verwehter Lyrik.

A couple of faster items to start with, featuring two guitar solos good enough to give you goose-bumps, then a collection of pieces located somewhere between the music of the fairground, daring chord progressions, and waltz-time melancholy, and which flirt delicately with kitsch: Grand Hotel, Homburg, words of lost lyricism.

Vielleicht war Brooker ja noch nie so gut wie heute, wenn er mit dem Aussehen eines Klavier spielenden Sparkassendirektors seine Ironie mit fester Stimme überspielt.

Perhaps Brooker has never sounded so good, as – with the look of a piano-playing bank manager – he disguises his irony with a firm voice.

Nach weit über zwei Stunden führt er seine Band in ein furioses Finale: mit einer berückend entrückten Orgelfantasie; mit A Salty Dog, einem anrührenden Minidrama, während Conquistador ekstatisch rockt und Procol Harum als eine Band mit eindrucksvoller Präsenz zeigt.

After well over two hours he leads his band into a furious finale: with a charmingly captivating organ fantasy; with the moving mini-drama of A Salty Dog, while Conquistador rocks ecstatically and shows Procol Harum to be a band of impressive force.
