Procol Harum at Skien, Norway

Helge Ottesen in Varden 6 March 2003

Varden, one of the local newspapers in Skien, gave the concert 5 points out of 6 points: read this article online

Procol Harum - serumet virker
The Procol Harum serum is working

Formelen virker. Gary Brooker var rene humørbomba i går.

(SKIEN) Procol Harum still has got the irresistible magic. The formula is working. Gary Brooker was in a very good mood yesterday.

Selvfølgelig spilte de A whiter shade of pale.

Of course they played A Whiter Shade of Pale. It was the encore after an up-rocked version of Conquistador and a mighty version of A Salty Dog. They played Beyond the Pale as well, characterized by Brooker as their Norwegian song. Once they traveled by boat from Stavanger to Bergen, and went on by car up and down the mountains.

We ended up in Tromsø, but should have been in Trondheim. So we turned the car and drove back. We were on the road for weeks up there. Luckily, we had plenty of acid, the greyish gentleman said in laughter.

Well done, Matt", lo Brooker.

A man with humour

Gary Brooker (vocal and piano) is a gentleman with plenty of humour. He thought it must have been the great-grandfather of Helge Siljan (today's manager of Ibsenhuset) who welcomed them when they visited Skien last time 27 years ago. Brooker has been on tour with Eric Clapton and has learned some about dressing. Organist Matthew Fisher looked at first like a tired teacher, dressed in tweeds, glasses and hair down to his shoulders. But as he started swinging around on his Hammond stool, we realized he still has the groove. The organ sound was irreproachable. In fact, it was Fisher who made the audience rise up and give the band a real big hand, after his new instrumental tune. Brooker explained in laughter: 'The first he has written in 35 years. Well done, Matt.'

Snakk om å henge igjen 'a...

The young Pegg on the bass was not most visible on stage, dressed in a suit. But he kept the beat and groove going. Geoff Whitehorn played a steady guitar accompaniment, but had conspicuous clothes: Tight stonewashed jeans, long hair down to his shoulders, pale sneakers, worn out t-shirt and a broad (!) red sweating band on his right wrist. A style he has kept for years?

The band played Robert's Box, which Brooker made a joke on as their drunk-addict-song, related to The Beatles' Dr. Robert. Both songs are about the same doctor in London who provided the musicians in the sixties with whatever they needed to get high or to get down...

Mye nytt stoff

Lots of new material
After an uplifted and up-rocked version of As Strong As Samson the band needed a beer interval. That's all OK. For a moment I thought they were so old they needed to catch their breath, but lubricating one's vocal chords is highly legal... In fact, Brooker's old and very characteristic soul voice was surprisingly well intact.

Sterke saker.

Procol Harum played a lot, at least six songs, from their new album. The album is so new that the CDs sold in the break were the first ones in town. Lyrics writer Keith Reid has settled in New York and has written Wall Street Blues and - not least - The Blink of An Eye about September 11. Moving lyrics indeed.

They played songs that only the fans remember as well, in addition to the classical ones they had to play, included Homburg.

A few lighters lit up the hall. But there were really no reasons to be nostalgic in that way. I think the band was highly living the whole concert long - some two hours. The few hundreds who didn't take the last seats should be repentant.
