If we were preparing this page for a more general audience, we'd want to weed out or smooth over some of the more convoluted constructions and even misunderstandings in the originals ...

MERCOLEDI´ sera allo Smeraldo, in un clima da revival di qualità, i Procol Harum si sono esibiti in un concerto costellato da frequenti applausi, urla di approvazione e infinite richieste da parte di un pubblico affascinato e coinvolto da un genere, a onor del vero, un po´ datato. A ripagarli ci hanno pensato Gary Brooker (sfoderando la stessa voce che ha fatto la fortuna del gruppo) e, il magico organo Hammond di Matthew Fisher, capace ricreare atmosfere ormai letteralmente perse nei meandri della memoria.

Wednesday evening at the Emerald, with a high-quality atmosphere of revival, Procol Harum appeared in a concert studded with frequent applause, yells of approval, and endless requests from a public deeply fascinated by a genre that is, to tell the truth, a little dated. Their reward was to hear Gary Brooker (displaying the same voice that made the group’s fortune) and the magical Hammond organ of Matthew Fisher, capable of recreating atmospheres now literally lost in the meanders of the memory.

Raggiunto il successo durante la felice stagione della musica pop alla fine degli Anni 60, i Procol Harum raggiunsero i vertici delle classifiche di tutto il mondo nel 1967 con il loro brano più famoso: «A Whiter Shade Of Pale». Il gruppo, farcito da esperti sessionmen, alla testa dei quali s´imposero Gary Brooker, voce e piano, e Matthew Fisher, organo (gli stessi che ancora oggi guidano la nuova band), pubblicò un album poi divenuto un classico.

Encountering success during that happy pop season in the late sixties, Procol Harum reached the peaks of the charts all over the world in 1967 with their most famous number, A Whiter Shade of Pale. The group, filled out with expert session men [sic!], and headed by Gary Brooker, voice and piano, and Matthew Fisher, organ (the same two who even today lead the new band) published an album which went on to become a classic.

Accolti da un pubblico molto ben predisposto, già al terzo brano ottengono ovazioni per quell´«Homburg» che qui da noi ebbe fortuna grazie ai Camaleonti («L´ora dell´amore»). Nonostante alcuni pezzi tratti dal loro repertorio meno noto, la gioia degli astanti non accenna a diminuire, anzi esplode quando si arriva a «She Wandered Through the Garden Fence» e a «Shine on Brightly», due perle rilette con lo spirito del tempo che fu.

Greeted by an extremely well-disposed public, already by the end of the third number they are getting ovations for that Homburg which here in Italy found fortune thanks to I Camaleonti [The Chameleons] as L’Ora dell’Amore [Time for Love]. Despite a few pieces chosen from their less well-known repertoire, the joy of the crowd shows no sign of diminishing, and fairly explodes when we get to She Wandered Through the Garden Fence and Shine on Brightly, two pearls re-read with the spirit of the time that was.

Dopo aver suonato un paio di pezzi dall´album che verrà alla luce nel prossimo febbraio («The Well´s on Fire») e dopo aver ignorato le richieste del pubblico, da «Conquistador» a «Kaleidoscope», da «Fortuna» a «Il tuo diamante», si arriva al termine del concerto con la platea in piedi. Fra urla come «Che Dio ti conservi la voce», «Grazie di esistere» e «Sei un genio», Brooker e compagni tornano in scena per il bis con «A Whiter Shade Of Pale» canticchiata dai più nella versione dei Dik Dik.

After they play a couple of tracks from the album which will emerge in February (The Well’s on Fire) and ignore the public’s requests, from Conquistador to Kaleidoscope, from Fortuna [Repent Walpurgis] to Il tuo diamante [Your Diamond - the Italian version of Shine On Brightly], we reach the end of the concert with the audience on its feet. Amid yells such as "May God preserve your voice", "Thank you for existing", and "You’re a genius", Brooker and colleagues return to the stage for the encore, with the great majority singing along to A Whiter Shade Of Pale in the Dik Diks’ version,

Alla fine, dopo un´ora e mezza abbondante di musica, il pubblico se ne va felice, perché è proprio vero che la nostalgia non conosce confini.

At the end, after an hour and a half packed with music, the public goes home happy, because it really is true that nostalgia knows no confines.
