Robin Trower : Dreaming the Blues

Ed Stone in Record Collector No 299, July 2004

ROBIN TROWER
Dreaming The Blues

Snapper SMDCD 500 (57:24) (39:04)

Blues, but not as we know it

This compilation shows the talent of the ex-Procol Harum guitarist nicely, but anyone who’s anyone will be well acquainted with it all anyway. Comprising the two albums 20th Century Blues from 1994 and 1997’s Someday Blues, plus live highlights from the This Was Now set, spanning 1974 and 1998, it’s a rather skewed compilation, and certainly not definitive.

Many of the tracks highlight not only Robin’s guitar and vocal skill, but also his love of power trio blues; think Cream and Hendrix.

We do get great live versions of Bridge of Sighs, 20th Century Blues and Crossroads, which will serve as a great introduction, but the less than informative sleeve notes and lack of anything new for fans makes a potentially great package less than fulfilling.
