Christmas Conundrums 2003

How did competitors rank the prizes?

BtP used a simple algorithm to compute the relative popularity of the fifteen prizes. If someone voted 'A' as their favourite prize out of the fifteen, we gave 'A' 15 points. If it was their second prize, we gave it 14 ... and so on. Then we did the same for 'B', 'C' and so forth: then we added up all the scores for each letter.

The table below shows the relative popularity of the prizes, with the highest score going to the prize that did best in Palers' choices: it looks as though the signed items won the day! Luckily, however, people all think differently: so great numbers of people nonetheless got their first choice of prize when the names came out of the hat, and no prize was unpopular ... as one would expect.
