Pam Chwedyk writes (January, 2003): I'd like to submit a clarification/correction and some comments about the gig listed as 5/1/77 at the Uptown Theater in Chicago:

This show actually took place at the Riviera Theater, a smaller venue across the street from the Uptown. The Uptown Theater (now closed) was a huge cavernous place where groups like the Kinks used to play. Apparently, disappointing ticket sales caused the Procol show to be moved to the Riv (as it is fondly known). As always, PH's performance was wonderful, but there was a sort of bittersweet sadness in the air. It was very evident that this was Procol's last tour and that they were going to break up when they got back to England. I can't recall for sure whether GB actually announced this on stage (though I seem to believe he did) or whether the writing was just obviously on the wall. I do remember very vividly that after the show I was standing on the corner of Clark Street and Lawrence Avenue waiting for a late night bus and thinking to myself, over and over, "I'm never going to see them again. What am I gonna do?" For years, whenever I traveled through that part of town and saw that street corner, I would get depressed. Of course, as we all know, the story has a happy ending--the Prodigal Strangers came back, 13 years later!
