'Majestic Harum'

Michael Point in Melody Maker, 20 July 1974

Majestic Harum

Houston: with a wave from Gary Brooker and the thumping intro to Bringing Home the Bacon, Procol Harum was back in Texas. Battling against the Houston Coliseum's cavernous acoustics with their usual brand of majestically textured music, Procol Harum managed to acquit themselves quite well and cap off a truly interesting concert in the process.

Golden Earring had opened the show … <snip> … Poco is a seemingly-indestructible band … <snip> …

Procol put heavy emphasis on their earlier and more up-tempo numbers with a set highlighted by Cerdes, Power Failure, Conquistador, and Shine on Brightly. Closing with a double-barrelled blast of Kaleidoscope and Simple Sister they easily earned an encore even though the audience was weary from sitting through the lengthy concert.

A Whiter Shade of Pale was the logical reward and it was duly delivered, ending a night of varied and totally entertaining music.
