PROCOL HARUM - 30th Anniversary Anthology (3cd 52 trx)

I need to call and order one tomorrow, I'll post the track list when I get it, unless someone beats me to the punch (which I hope)

I hope the previously unreleased stereo recording of "Whiter Shade" is on this. It would be nice if they had a stereo "Repent Walpurgis" as well, heck how about the whole thing to be stereo :)

Thoughtscape also lists the Brooker CD "Within Our House". I don't know if it will have an american release or not. Repertoire picked up distribution on it so it might be a possibilty.

Well the word was that someone found a master somewhere with a studio version of "Whiter Shade". I was joking about there being a whole album in stereo. I wish there was that possibility, however I do think the "reprocessed stereo" effect worked well on the 2 songs on the Greatest Hits Remastered. "WSOP" and "RW". I better go ahead and call Thoughtscape now.

Absolutely! But I always thought it was recorded in mono, so it's hard to see how they'll come up with a stereo version. Is it just going to be re-channeled? Yours Roland ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I went out to the store this evening as my local import supplier got them in. Sadly mine is defective, disc 2 of the set does not work. I just hope they aren't all like this!

Disc 1: Procol Harum (1967) [note: no Whiter Shade of Pale on disc 1] 1. Conquistador 2. She Wandered Through The Garden Fence 3. Something Following Me 4. Mabel 5. Cerdes (Outside The Gates Of) 6. A Christmas Camel 7. Kaleidoscope 8. Salad Days (Are Here Again) 9. Good Captain Clack 10. Repent Walpurgis

Shine On Brightly (1968) 11. Quite Rightly So 12. Shine On Brightly 13. Skip Softly (My Moonbeams) 14. Wish Me Well 15. Rambling On 16. Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone) 17. In Held Twas In I (a) Glimpses Of Nirvana (b) Twas Teatime At The Circus (c) In The Autumn Of My Madness (d) Look To Your Soul (e) Grand Finale

Disc 2: A Salty Dog (1969) [note: no Salty Dog on disc 2] 1. The Milk Of Human Kindness 2. Too Much Between Us 3. The Devil Came From Kansas 4. Boredom 5. Juicy John Pink 6. Wreck Of The Hesperus 7. All This And More 8. Crucifiction Lane 9. Pilgrims Progress

Home (1970) 10. Whisky Train 11. The Dead Man's Dream 12. Still There'll Be More 13. Nothing That I Didn't Know 14. About To Die 15. Barnyard Story 16. Piggy Pig Pig 17. Whaling Stories 18. Your Own Choice

Disc 3: Singles A & B Sides / Outtakes / Alternative Takes 1. A Whiter Shade Of Pale (A-side) 2. Lime Street Blues (B-side) 3. Homburg (A-side) 4. Good Captain Clack (B-side) 5. Quite Rightly So (A-side) 6. In The Wee Small Hours Of Sixpence (B-side) 7. A Salty Dog (A-side) 8. Long Gone Geek (B-side) 9. Monsieur Armand (Outtake) 10. Seem To Have The Blues (Mostly All The Time) (Outtake) 11. A Whiter Shade Of Pale (Previously unreleased stereo version) 12. A Whiter Shade Of Pale (Previously unreleased backing track) 13. Homburg (Alternative 1967 re-recording) 14. Homburg (Previously unreleased 1967 stereo version) 15. Conquistador (Alternative 1967 stereo take) 16. She Wandered Through The Garden Fence (Alternative 1967 stereo take) 17. Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone) (Previously unreleased original 1967 version)

The most interesting of note is the stereo version of AWSOP and the stereo takes of a few other songs. Another thing of note, the first disc with the 1967 self titled album does not include AWSOP or the title track for A Salty Dog. They are on the 3rd disc only. Overall a very good price for so many songs. It would have been great if they had some live bonus tracks on it but I can't complain, finally a stereo AWSOP! Yes! (the sound on this track is fabulous)

Now if I can just get one that has a working 2nd disc. I'll have to wait til friday to try a 2nd time. I'm glad I hadn't mail ordered this one. I'll post again if I find that this defective 2nd disc was just a one time fluke or not.

Thanks for this posting, Bill. My thoughts:

Disc 1: Procol Harum (1967) [note: no Whiter Shade of Pale on disc 1] Good! UK fans never thought it belonged there in the first place.

Disc 2: A Salty Dog (1969) [note: no Salty Dog on disc 2] Extraordinary: this will affect the balance of the record tremendously.

Disc 3: 5. Quite Rightly So (A-side) Is this the standard take or the reported Scandinavian variant which I've never heard?

6. In The Wee Small Hours Of Sixpence (B-side) Any idea which of the two takes this is? The one from the 45rpm or the one from the 'Early Years' set (Dojo records 1992)

11. A Whiter Shade Of Pale (Previously unreleased stereo version) 12. A Whiter Shade Of Pale (Previously unreleased backing track) 13. Homburg (Alternative 1967 re-recording) 14. Homburg (Previously unreleased 1967 stereo version) 15. Conquistador (Alternative 1967 stereo take) 16. She Wandered Through The Garden Fence (Alternative 1967 stereo take) 17. Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone) (Previously unreleased original 1967 version)

11-17 are the bits I really want! Did anyone else know or suspect that MMRZ was a holdover from the 1967 sessions? Do you have any idea if there's a possibilty of getting disc 3 separately?

Overall a very good price for so many songs. It would have been great if they had some live bonus tracks on it but I can't complain, finally a stereo AWSOP! Yes! (the sound on this track is fabulous)

Is there no truth in the rumour that 'Il Tuo Diamante' was going to be included, then?

I had heard somewhere, probably in an interview or something, that the stuff (like a lot of the other music of that period) was recorded on four-track, then mixed down to mono for release. There were probobly stereo mixes made at that time, and shelved for whatever reason. Remember when the first few Beatles albums (which were 4-track recordings mixed to mono) were released in stereo by Capitol in the '60's? The mixes were terrible, with everything panned far left or far right. Those actually sounded better in mono (and that's how they were released on CD). What would be REALLY interesting is if the four-track elements were hauled out and the stuff was newly mixed and mastered into stereo by someone with a sensitive enough ear to maintain the original overall balances while at the same time creating the right stereo "space" I don't suppose anyone at the company that owns the original masters and elements cares enough about the stuff to go that route, though. Also, depending on how the track space was allocated during the sessions and whether there was any track bouncing to allow for more overdubs, it may well be possible that the only kind of stereo mix possible is the instruments left/vocals right type of mix that sounded so bad on the Capitol Beatle releases. If that were the case, I'd rather hear just clean, unprocessed mono. I'm really anxious to hear what they used on the 30th Anniversary set. Hello, I've been on this mailing list for awhile, but up until I've kept my mouth shut. However, I feel compelled to comment upon the track listing given for the 30th Anniversary Box Set. Two words can describe it: "What crap"!. This is NOT a qualitive statement regarding the music - that's great, but what pisses me of is that we're being regurgitated the same old stuff over again! What is nwe to this set that we haven't heard before? As far as I can tell it's on;y the variants of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" and after plunking down all those bucks for the recent Repertoire reissues, this just doesn't seem like very good value for the dollar. While, yes, it would be nice to have the stereo versions of "Garden Fence", "Conquistador", et al on CD, my comp LP on Fly (or Columbia for those of you in the Netherlands) will be able to suffice. And, when the hell are we going to get the true single version of "Wee Small Hours" out on disc? Besides the orginal single's run on A&M, the only other appearance of this version (that I know of) was only available on the promo release THE A&M BOOTLEG ALBUM (SP-8022, 1973) - which also makes it strange that they used an alternate version (the same that we're now constantly hearing) on their previous year's BEST OF (SP-4401) LP. Since I have the ROCK ROOTS album on a French CD, "Seem To Have The Blues" and "Monsieur Armand" are also redundant to me. My next gripe is regarding the set's time-frame. Why does it end after only the first four albums? You'd think at least that something from either BROKEN BARRICADES or LIVE would be included (and when the hell are we going to get expanded versions of those?). Even if you keep the set within that framework, what about including some of the Matthew Fisher produced versions of the HOME tracks that was written about in Repertoire's notes for the CD? Finally, yes, the original mutlitracks fro the first (if not all) of Procol's albums exist. I was speaking with Joe Foster (of Creation REcords in the UK) who told me that he literally stumbled over the boxes at the offices for Essex Music (where they also have the tapes for The Move, Pete Townsend demos and Tyrannasaurus Rex). He also told me that the publishers have no idea of what to do with these tapes. So, perhaps someone who has some connections or authority can be persuaded to get the hell down there and do the job right. I've had enough of cheesy reissues, the band's music, reputation and significance deserve better treatment.

yours,

Karl Baker

In case there's anybody else like me who's deeply confused by all this, would someone who's got the records explain (a) what label this anniversary set is on and (b) what kinship it has to the Repertoire re-issues?

And, when the hell are we going to get the true single version of "Wee Small Hours" out on disc?

The 'new' version strikes me as much inferior. Surely it is an earlier take? Brooker doesn't seem to have the melody worked out.

My next gripe is regarding the set's time-frame. Why does it end after only the first four albums? You'd think at least that something from either BROKEN BARRICADES or LIVE would be included (and when the hell are we going to get expanded versions of those?).

The watershed might appear to be the moment KR and GB formed Bluebeard to publish their music. But if Bluebeard were the sticking point, that wouldn't hold back issuing an expanded Edmonton set.

BTW what's missing? 'Luskus Delph', 'Shine on Brightly'? Someone told me 'Fires (which burnt brightly)' was played that early but that seems quite unlikely.

Even if you keep the set within that framework, what about including some of the Matthew Fisher produced versions of the HOME tracks that was written about in Repertoire's notes for the CD?

So, perhaps someone who has some connections or authority can be persuaded to get the hell down there and do the job right.

The market is so deeply flooded with variant reissues, as you point out, it's hard to see who would imagine that yet another mix would sell enough to make it financially worth doing. Sadly

Possibility (and most likely to remain that way): 2nd box set to cover the Barricades/Ball/Grabham years w/all the cool singles they did (backgammon,Blue Danube etc). Just how much non-LP material did the final 70s version of Procol record anyhow? Someday I hope to know as much about Procol as Henry Scott-Irvine (or more). Despite general dissatisfaction with newnesslessness (new word of the day) on the set's contents, some questions: How well is it packaged?

Its a CD sized box that holds 3 discs, nothing fancy.

how copious are the liner notes?

Liner notes are in CD 1's case only. Not overly exhaustive but they tell you what is on the set in good enough detail.

are the CDs appropriately cool looking (as in having the covers on the cd of the LPs they represent).

Covers include a print of a Conquistador painting that is well known, and include the covers of the albums represented. Looks pretty good IMO. Disc 3 has a crate type box that says Rarities on it. I like how they look.

Does MF have all of the tapes from his sessions with the band as producer?

This question I'm not sure I understand what you ask.

Why was Home not completed as a Fisher production? how far into Home did they make the Thomas switch? Do the Dave Ball session for Grand Hotel still exist? They would make an interesting thing indeed. Why are there so many versions of "In the Wee Small?"

Good questions, perhaps someone with more knowledge on the band has some answers.

Ah well....is there any publicity surrounding this anniversary set out there other than internet and curious Procol fans finding it on accident?

Not a whole lot of publicity here in the US to my knowledge but I did see it listed on a couple mail order sites so I was the first on the list (to my knowledge) to spot it.

Possibility (and most likely to remain that way): 2nd box set to cover the Barricades/Ball/Grabham years w/all the cool singles they did (backgammon,Blue Danube etc). Just how much non-LP material did the final 70s version of Procol record anyhow?

Ooh this would be a nice box set. Too bad the music is on different labels we could have had a wonderful box set then. Perhaps Crysalis will join the fray? Lets hope.

Someday I hope to know as much about Procol as Henry Scott-Irvine (or more). Saving his money for another day and asking too many questions, Jason

Well I have learned a lot in the last few months from various web pages, this list, browsing the newsgroups, checking AOL a couple times etc. I'm a recent fan actually, only a couple years.

Here's a review of that Boxed Set from the Guestbook at Jens' Site: ******** Received from Bob Jaccino (<a ref="mailto:ramino@prtcl.com" ramino@prtcl.com</a) - 1997.10.05-16.58.54 ********

Hello- I'm a long-time Procol Harum fan and I just bought the new 30th Anniversary 3-CD Anthology released in England. The first CD has the "Procol Harum" and "Shine on Brightly" albums. Disc 2 has "A Salty Dog" & "Home". The third disc has A & B sides of the UK singles through the "Home" album period plus alternate/out-take versions of "Whiter Shade", "Conquistador", "Magdalene", "Homburg", and "She Wandered Through the Garden Fence". The sound quality on these discs is amazing! You can hear things you've never heard before. The only problem I had is on Disc 2, track 1 will not play unless I skip to track 2 and scan backwards to the first song. If the manufacturer gets enough complaints, maybe they will replace defective discs. If not, it's only a minor inconvenience. The set is wonderful and, like I said before, the sound will astound many fans... <<<

CDNow isn't carrying this set (yet). Can someone post a mailorder source for the above - preferably including phone Number? Thanks! ================

Best, Joan :-)

I'm forwarding this on. I wonder if this person knows about the current reissues? In fact there are plans for yet *more* reissues, like we don't have enough. These next ones might include some songs like "Macgregor" and "A Robe of Silk". Too bad they can't just release one album that includes only previously unreleased tracks. How many versions of the same album are they gonna make us buy??

FWIW I mentioned the multiple reissues to Gary Brooker at Aldershot and he said that they'd taken him by surprise. He hadn't known about the triple box set any sooner than fans did. 'Where did they get a 1967 'Magdalene'? he said.

Well the person who was credited for compiling this particular project was Henry Scott-Irvine. The info I got about future reissues was from that Mojo magazine article that is on Jens page.

I was able to play disc 2 of the set after trying it on a different CD player. I went to track 2 then it played. I already have ASD seperately so I don't need to play track 1. It's a shame that they all have this defect. Stores are going to get an awful lot of these back, and the replacements they will give the customer will have the same trouble.

Hi, Procol fans,

I have two questions. First, though I am fan for as long as I can think (and that's rather a long time, I hope), I didn't come across the song "A robe of silk". Gary played a few bars of it at the anniversary concert, but it didn't seem familiar to me. It was mentioned a few time on this list, but with no further information. Second, has anybody of the list been to Aldershot? I didn't have the time to go to England to attend the concert, but I hope someone did to tell us how it went and whether it will be available on CD (maybe on Gary's own Gazza label).

Thank you, Frank

Yes, an Aldershot review with pictures is imminent at Jens's site. It wasn't recorded officially and there wasn't a DAT on the desk. It was largely excellent and there was a big crowd. I suspect there will be other Within our House gigs. More info when available

That is Jens' new address for the "Shine On Brightly" (has a new name though) page but it is now a co-managed site with Roland Chase. It will be different than the older page I believe. I suppose I should let Jens fill us in on the full details.

The list is growing albeit gradually, it is now at 60 subscribers.

Subject: www.procolharum.com

Hi everybody Frank Matheus raised a question about the new website at http://www.procolharum.com so I guess I'd better clearify this. My Procol Harum website 'Shine On' at http://home.sn.no/~jensan/Procol.htm has been on the net since march. During that time it has expanded and now has more than 100 visitors daily. Thanks to all you fellow Procol Harum fans on the net, I get lots of articles, info and other to post on the website. And I love to to this (although very time consuming) work for the band I love, their music and their fans. I realize that the website could have been better than what is achieved by now, and the fortcoming move is a step in the direction to get a better website.

Thanks to Mattias Gidlof I have been granted free services from Swedish Connection. A Swedish internet service provider. They can give the website solutions not aivailable from my present provider. One thing that will soon be included on the website is discussion groups (bulletin boards). A service many has asked for. They also can give Real Audio (If the band don't veto it. How wonderful it would be for us all to be able to hear some of those ureleased songs). Online Shopping (A better way to buy the nice things from 'Shine On'). But those last two items are for a possible use in the future.

Swedish Conenction has also helped me implement a more convenient URL. I have got permission from Kellogs and members of Procol Harum to use the easy to remember domaine name http://www.procolharum.com The URL is now working, and october 8. we upploaded an interview with a friend of B.J.Wilson. As a tribute to this wonderful drummer. We are now working hard to implement the rest of the website on this new URL. When we open, I think you'll find it better looking and better structured.

The move to SC has also made it possible to have other working on the website, and Roland Clare is helping me sharing the workload. I am shure he will also help me and correct my English. So the website is now an international affair: I am living in Kristiansand, Norway.Roland Clare lives in Bristol, England and the website resides on a server in Sweden. And most importand. Contributors to the site lives all over the world. What a wonderful thing Internet is.

The name I choose for my website 'Shine On Brightly' has led many to believe there is a connection between the 'Shine On' fanclub and this site. There is none. But in the near future the 'Shine On' newsletter will be posted on this website. (Roland Clare and Diane Rolph are doing this together). To avoid confusion betwen the fanclub and this website, we (Roland and I) deceided a name change was to come. After several weeks of contemplation, we deceided on the name 'Beyond the Pale'. A very Procol like name. It has a lot of good things going for it: great song (which GB referred to as an old Norwegian Folk Song, and I am Norwegian!): + 'beyond the' refers to the Latin 'Procol'and 'Pale' speaks for itself

So 'Beyond the Pale' is the new place for my old website 'Shine On Brightly' I hope this will be an improvement for all us Procol Harum fans.

By the way. The website is absolutely no comercial. I pay my own phone bills, the domaine name registration, advertising on the search engines and so on. And the website gives no (moneywise) income. I love Procol Harum and their music. And this is my way of saying' thank's'. The items offered for sale ar NOT sold by me, Roland or this website. But we think it is right to help those having items for sale to promote their products. After all we all really want their products!

The website is NOT connected with Procol Harum or any of their fanclubs. But, we want the website to be in the bands best interest and spirit. And we are proud to know that some of the bandmembers visit the website daily. We also gladly cooperate with and promote the Procol Harum fanclubs. After all, we are all here for the same reason: The love for Procol Harum, their music and those wonderful musicians that make it. --

Shine On! Jens A Ravnaas

H, Procol fans,

I bought the new "Rhythm Kings" album yesterday. It's called "Strutting our stuff" and has two nice stickers on it. First says "The new Bill Wyman album", and the second features the engaged artist. No. 2 is, after Bill W. himself, Gary Brooker. But alas, when you open the jewel case and read the credits, you'll find that Gary is playing only on one track ("Bad to be alone"), and he's treating the organ! Good thing is, that the track is very fine and the rest of the album is o.k., too. Guess who is doing the drum job on all the titles - yes, it's Graham Broad, and he is doing well. Has anybody attendes one of the live concerts?

Regards, Frank

Yes that would be great if someone could host the archives, I have every individual post sent to the list since it's inception for this reason but I'm not experienced in archiving lists (someone else does th Livgren list archiving), I'd be willing to help with this but I'd like to be able to have it hosted on procolharum.com, could this be done Jens? What a treat. I'm hearing the First Procol Album again as if for the first time. I can almost clearly make out the lyrics or "words" , as KR insists, to Cerdes (otgo).

A WSoP backing track is on the 3rd disk. Now I have my Karaoke track for the contests. I've been wowing them with "the Days of Wine and Roses" and "Satisfaction" but now I have AWSoP. <VBG

This set is a must have for any confirmed Procolholic. Big thanks to Henry Scott-Irvine as well as Tom Moulton and Greg Vaughn who are credited with mixing and mastering at Frankford/Wayne Mastering Labs in New York, USA.

Now if we can persuade the powers that be to put together the second set with the Procol Harum monster CD ROM as a bonus. Interviews past and present, all four verses to that song, photographs and ancient film footage included. Heads up there Doug Adams!

This collection of the first four is clearly more than just another "BEST OF" collection. These are the shimmering jewels, the treasures from far across the sea. Besides, I really wanted to listen to these songs in the same sequence I first heard them.

Whilst reading some fine oratories by Cicero and lsitening to _EB&F_, I noticed that the drums are "fairly decent" on all the tracks except for Strong as Samson, where they sound as if they were sunk beneath numerous layers of mixing and other tracks. Secondly, Gary's vocal track seems too prominent in the collage of Procoldelic sound. Does anyone know why/how this happened?

Also, has Chris Thomas produces anyone else?

In his recent posting Jason (btw, how do manage to combine reading Cicero's oratories - in Latin? - with listening to PH and pay special attention to the drums?!) raised a question regarding Chris Thomas's production work besides PH.

I can at least provide you this little bit:

My Dutch rock encyclopedia (1982 edition) mentions Chris Thomas as the producer of "Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Procol Harum, Pretenders, Paul McCartney, Tom Robinson, Sex Pistols' 'Anarchy in the UK'".

I think he was also involved in the production of Pink Floyd's 'Dark side of the Moon' (this can be easily checked by anyone on the list who has a copy of this classic).

It would indeed be good to have some more information on CT, and his involvement in the creation of the five PH albums he produced. I remember that in a radio interview Gary Brooker discussed the - influential - role of CT in the production of 'Grand Hotel'.

A friend once told me that Chris Thomas is deaf in one ear...

There must be Procologists out there who can tell us a lot more.

Wilfried

Agreed. I wonder how Leiber and Stoller look back on their effort on Procol's Ninth...or if they remember it at all.

Subject: first greetings from Uruguay

Hi everybody there!! My name is Marcelo Pereira. I'm 39 years old, journalist, and live in Montevideo, Uruguay, South America (a small country between Brazil and Argentina). It may be hard to believe, but in the sixties the first Procol records were available in my country, in local editions, and had some success. The first I bought, second-hand, was Shine On Brightly, and there were also editions of the first LP (in both versions!), Salty Dog, Home and, much later Procol's Ninth (the others I managed to get from Argentina and Brazil, and later I could begin to buy US LPs and CDs, so now I have the eleven, but still couldn't find compact editions of Broken Barricades, Exotic Birds and Fruit & Procol Ninth's. In this distant corner of the world, I can be satisfied). I'm asked to tell what Procol music means to me, and it's not easy. Procol was one of my first loves, and is still a group that shows me how intense and intelligent can music be, how poetry and R&B can live happily together, as well as skilled composition and humour, or diversity and coherence. Procol is also the home of some incredible players, BJ Wilson in the first place, and it proofs as very few bands that when the musician serves the music, and the group, he reaches higher than any virtuoso showing how good he is. I play guitar (made it semi-pro a few years, and now for myself) and, though my music was never close to Procol (in style and, of course, in quality), I always felt Procol as an inspiration about the meaning of making music. Well, that's all for the first time. Sorry if my English is not OK.

Nice to see Gary Brooker and Graham Broad on Top of The Pops 2, BBC 2, Saturday 25 October, with the Bill Wyman Rhythm Kings.

GB looked very relaxed and happy and GB2 was concentrating hard. Huge band! It must have been a clip from the Forum gig, I think, but nobody in our household caught the introduction.

However since one song was filmed, it may well mean that the whole show will be broadcast at some stage.

Eyes peeled!

The local record store in town has the 3 re-issues of Procol Harum, SOB and ASD for $20+ a pop. I sigh heavily...what makes it worse is that I already have the CDs---one hates to waste money in college. At least I can look at them fondly. Though I must admit I don't like the presence of only one extra track on ASD.

You are probably better off getting the 30th Anniversary Anthology set because it includes the first 4 albums plus those extra tracks and the first ever studio version of "Whiter Shade of Pale". Call me nuts but I would have bought the set just for this! I didn't have _Home_ yet though so this made it at least worth getting a bit more. The set goes for around $30 depending on where you get it. One song it doesn't have that the reissues have is "Il Tuo Diamante" but that one is just the music of "Shine On Brightly" with different and Italian lyrics. I think this is the only song you'd be missing.

Now that I have WebTV, I've found some excellent stuff - in addition to the discovery of Air On A G String on Tex's Site!

For example -- at the House of Blues Site - they have full length gigs in RealAudio - and the RT gig from LA/HOB, 6/97 is there!! If you have a RealAudio player - goto

http://liveconcerts.com/listening/concerts/

and click on the menus for Classic Rock, Blues, or alphabetical listings - you'll get RT in Fine Form for over an HOUR! Even on my small mono TV - he sounds HOT - Much better than on his last few albums, IMO.. Just one thing though - I kept wishing for BJ on drums!!

The RT Newsletter "Trower Power" is worth getting too - the latest issue has a very friendly message from RT, inviting fans to email him with their ideas, and that he'll report fans' messages of general interest in the next newsletter. Also in the letter was great praise for Scott Sutherland's WebSite! It remains to be seen if RT will follow up on his outreach to his fans - but so far - I'm IMPRESSED!!

I think I'll write to him - to see if he remembers how fantastic he and BJ sounded together - as immortalized on WPLJ. I see no reason for that great gig to be lost forever -- and it included RT compositions - WT, MD, JJP - as well as some of his best blues playing. Perhaps he'd have some ideas on how to get the "best of WPLJ" released as Bonus Tracks or in some other format.. If he responds, he'll probably say he's not interested in the past, but I believe that's not the way to think about great art - which is Timeless. I do hope he still admires BJ's playing and might be interested for that reason..

Hi, procol fans,

I received the box yesterday, and I must say, the sound is really brilliant. Even if you have the albums on vinyl, it's worth it. The tracks have been treated with modern equipment, and the mixing engeneers have revealed sounds, that I didn't hear before on the records. I didn't listen to the three seperate released first albums, but I agree Bill, that the box is the better offer as the seperate CDs all have the normal price (what means for Germany 35,- DM, i.e. about 20 $ each).

BTW: I again like to ask: What is "The robe of silk"?

I don't know much about history ... but I can quote GB (Felt Forum, 1973)

'Sometimes when we're making records we often have a lot alot more songs than ... well not a lot more ... but usually a few more than we actually put down on the record ... 'cos you ... just run out of time; a couple of things got left behind from the first album and the second album ... this is called 'Pandora's Box' ...

The band then launch into the pre Leiber/Stoller PB, which segues into 'A Robe of Silk' ... so I guess 'Robe' is also a song that dates from the time of those early albums. MF joined in with it at Redhill so that also suggests it was around during his first spell with the band.

The song is brisk, brief, keyboard-oriented rather than guitar-led; it has irregular phrase-lengths a bit like 'Your Own Choice'; unusually it features a harmony vocal; the recording I have is so indistinct that I can't make out the words.

Perhaps someone with a clearer version can offer a bit more info.

Hi guys.

Let me introduce myself.

My name is Mathieu, I am from France, and I recently joined the Procol List. I receive now a lot of mails from you, and some are introducing temselves. So it's my turn. I think I am the youngest among us. I am only 21 years old, and I am very keen of Procol Music... Magical moment for me. I ve bought all the record in CD . I miss only Broken Barricades. and I listen to them again , and again with the hope to play one day some of their songs. I am playing piano and guitar, and I am looking for some scores.. Do you know where I can find that ?? I ve got one partition, but it's only chords. I look for real transcriptions, and guitar tab. SO, this is an advertise for the musician.

But, I would like to know, where I can find a bootleg of the concert in Redhill last July. I was really upset to miss that rendez vous for their 30th birthday of AWSOP. But I hope to have answers of my questions. If there are French Fans, just write to me and hope to meet you one day. Why not for their 35 birthday !! :)

Mathieu

I think the number one reason why a song book of Procol's material--by a song book I mean one which actually has the trascription of all the main instruments, not just the annoying "piano-vocal-guitar" format of uninspired releases-- is the sheear volume of pages it would take...One would have to figure out the organ, piano, vocal and guitar lines... one line alone would take six transcribed lines( 2 for piano and organ each, guitar..etc). It would just be too big. But then again, we want quality with quantity don't we?:)

We want quality, but even the annoying and uninspired would surely be better than noting (at least, something to begin with). Anyway, a lot of groups with very little to offer has been graced with "quality" songbooks - it's a real shame that Procol hasn't, since there's so much to learn from in their work. It's no surprise: we've had a hundred deluxe boxed sets of incredibly weak bands and are still waiting for a decent complete reedition of Procol... but the truth won't fade away!

No you're not - I'm only 15. I'm really glad there are some other younger Procol fans. I played In Held Twas In I in its entirety for my Arts & Humanities class last week, and a few people told me it was "awsome"and such things. I think if Procol Harum were putting out their (best) stuff now, or even had better exposure and radio play, they'd aquire quite a respectable younger following.

<<I am playing piano and guitar, and I am looking for some scores.. Do you know where I can find that ??

I play piano too, and would love it if somebody would make some of the piano scores available, on the internet or otherwise...unfortunately, Andrew Ace's guitar tabs aren't of much help to me.
