Victims of the Fury

A Keith Reid song

The words have been set to music, quite differently, by Robin Trower (1980) and by Gary Brooker; Procol Harum have occasionally played the Brooker version (unrecorded), and it was one of the songs aired at BtP's 'Procol Rarum' evening in London in 2007.

You were all the rays of sunlight, you were shining gold to me
All the colours of the rainbow, I was blessed by high decree

You were every moment's pleasure, you were joy beyond compare
You were all the rays of sunlight;I was lost without a care

Victims of the fury, shadows in the dark
Victims of the fury, arrows found their mark

So we lived our days in rapture, like the world could never end
We weren't thinking 'bout the future: there was time enough to spend

We were blessed as though in heaven, we were messengers of joy
There were rainbows all around us, there was none who dared destroy

Victims of the fury, shadows in the dark
Victims of the fury, arrows found their mark

Then the world collapsed around us and the buildings overturned
We were lambs before the slaughter we were taken out and burned

Yes, the world collapsed around us and the archers found their mark
We were victims of the fury; we were shadows in the dark
