How I came to orchestrate 'Walpurgis'

Christian Kabitz

We invited Christian Kabitz to tell the story of how he became involved in arranging Repent Walpurgis for The Symphonic Music of Procol Harum CD: we were delighted to receive this reply, which was kindly translated into English for BtP by Peter Christian

Here's the somewhat lengthy tale of Christian Kabitz and Repent Walpurgis

1970 – bei meinem Abitur – habe ich in diesem Konzert (what a shock!)

As you've guessed, I really am a hardcore PH fan and have been ever since about 1968 – I was born in 1950. PH was the music of my youth! In my school (the Karls-Gymnasium in Munich) after Abitur ('A' levels), there was always a big concert in the main concert hall in Munich, with performances of Handel's Messiah or a Mozart Piano Concerto and choral music. In 1970 – after my Abitur – I risked doing Repent Walpurgis (what a shock!) – and it got a rapturous response. I played the great organ myself, my girlfriend was on the piano and the school band played the rest.

That was the musical basis, for when I decided a few years ago to do a cross-over concert in my church in Würzburg, where I work as church musician, with a band and choir and orchestra, everything apart from Music ('... was my first love ...') was by PH. We boldly rang up Gary Brooker to ask whether he would do us the honour of singing his beautiful old songs – he agreed. The concert was immediately sold out and we had to repeat it at 11 o'clock at night. Gary seemed to enjoy it and he promised to play with us again some time.

A year or two later this came to fruition in a grand 'PH Symphonic Tour', with – I can't remember exactly – about 40 concerts all over Germany. The orchestra and chorus were from Prague, PH were the band, though there was no one but Gary from the old line-up. I was the conductor. For a couple of pieces (Repent wasn't in the programme) a friend from Würzburg had written arrangements that we used on the tour; everything else had been brought by Gary from England or Australia.

On the tour, we were missing an encore – we didn't want to keep playing A Whiter Shade for the third time – and I suggested to Gary that we do Repent. He hadn't got any orchestral parts or any idea for an arrangement, as he had never previously played it in a 'symphonic version'. In the hotel I wrote a score and the orchestral parts from my head, and from that day on it was our favourite encore.

Two years later, Gary rang me and asked if I wouldn't like to write a large, new, more fully developed version for his symphonic CD. He told me all the facilities that were available and I got straight down to it. Admittedly I didn't – and I'll be quite honest about this – write out the band parts: I wrote the orchestral score only, not keeping close to the original recording in the hope that during the recording process the band would play something that would fit my score. I wasn't involved in the recording process at all, but one day I was told that the CD was ready and it would be presented in a concert and I would get a free ticket.

I then flew to London and went to the concert, and listened to it. I hadn't got my score with me, but a few things had certainly been changed. Unfortunately I didn't get to speak to Matthew and I don't know if he has any criticisms, but I spoke to Gary and I've got the CD, so that – full of pride – I can listen to my version now and then.

Das, lieber Roland, ist die Geschichte. Viele liebe Grüße ...

And that's the story: very best wishes ...
