Shine On - The Best of the Whalers

Artist profile: Antonio Costa Barbé (Italy)

The Dead Man's Dream (Brooker-Reid) 4:38 and Liquid Sea (A + C Barbé)

The first track from Antonio Costa Barbé is a real piece of history, having been taped in May 1971 in his home town of Novara, in the presence of a former Italian President, a fellow-native. Featuring Antonio (then aged 17) on piano and voice, Claudio Macaluso (15) on Hammond L-100, Enzio Provvidone (18) on bass, Sandro Volterrani (17) on guitar and Roberto Macaluso (17) on drums, it is optimistically introduced as 'one of the most beautiful songs off Home'. The teacher who helped with the English words transcribed 'my legs were deformed' as 'I race through the fog'! Liquid Sea comes from the 1990 album Come Fregoli: Antonio (a charismatic vocalist when the Palers' Band met at Guildford, September 2000) sings, and plays the arpeggio figure; real guitars and MIDI devices are handled by Enrico Hofer, and the brass work is by Maurizio Nebbia.
