BtP's late-summer Prize Prog Competition

The prizes • many thanks to Cherry Red / Esoteric Records

Five lucky readers of 'Beyond the Pale' will win all the albums below. How the competition for these great prizes works ... and the first simple question ... and the winners and the solution

Gary Brooker Lead Me to the Water (remastered, with bonus track)

OK, the chances are that you have this album already, if you're a 'Beyond the Pale' reader. But here's your chance to win a second copy (remastered, with bonus track), so you can give the first one to a friend. And the lovely people at Cherry Red / Esoteric are giving us copies of all five albums on this page, five times: so five lucky winners of our late-summer prize prog competition will find their mail-boxes brimming, if not wholly clogged, with this collection of classic European music.

PFM The World Became the World (remastered, expanded edition with three bonus tracks)

Premiata Forneria Marconi, better known in English-speaking countries as PFM , were arguably the finest Italian Progressive rock band of the 1970 s and certainly one of the most well known. A successful act in their home land, they came to international attention when they signed to Emerson, Lake and Palmer's label MANTICORE in 1973. They recorded the album The World Became The World in 1974. With English lyrics, some penned by ELP / King Crimson/ Brooker lyricist Pete Sinfield, this edition of PFM s second album for Manticore has been re-mastered from the analogue tapes and includes three bonus tracks, ( two of which are previously unreleased), a lavishly illustrated booklet, new essay and fully restored artwork.

PFM Photos of Ghosts (remastered, expanded edition with three bonus tracks)

PFM recorded Photos of Ghosts in 1973. With English lyrics, some penned by Pete Sinfield (who also produced the album), this edition of PFM's début album for Manticore has been re-mastered from the analogue tapes and includes six previously unreleased bonus tracks of early mixes from the album sessions, a lavishly illustrated booklet, new essay and fully restored artwork.

Spooky Tooth Lost in My Dreams (remastered, anthology 1968-1974: two hitherto unreleased songs)

2CD anthology by the legendary Spooky Tooth, spanning their entire recorded output for Island Records from their first single to 1974's The Mirror. Evolving from the VIPs into psychedelic rockers Art before becoming Spooky Tooth, the band were one of the early stars of the label, along with compatriots Traffic. One of the most intelligent acts of their time, they recorded a series of diverse albums including the classic Spooky Two and the experimental work Ceremony (also released by Esoteric Recordings). Including non-album singles, a previously unreleased mix of Lost in My Dream and two previously unreleased songs from 1968, this anthology is the most comprehensive collection of Spooky Tooth's finest work yet and is a fine tribute to a fine, and sometimes overlooked, band.

Vangelisl'Apocalypse des Animaux  (remastered by Vangelis)

Vangelis’s classic soundtrack to l'Apocalypse des Animaux, a film made in 1973 by the famous French documentary maker Frederic Rossif: written and recorded by Vangelis, it's a fine example of the maestro’s ability to compose music that both suited the visual images of the film maker and stirred the emotions of the listener. Recorded prior to Vangelis’s experiments with synthesisers, the music for L’Apocalypse des Animaux was a breathtaking example of his dexterity as a musician and composer, utilising the keyboard technology of the day to its fullest and previously-untapped potential. The soundtrack album is now rightly regarded as a classic of both the genre and of Vangelis’s remarkable body of recordings. The Esoteric Recordings reissue has been remastered under the supervision of Vangelis himself.
