On Saturday 16 May 1998, the Dutch national radio station 'Radio 2' broadcast a Top 60 of the 1960s, compiled by the station's listeners (and concluding a week dedicated to the popular music of the 60s):
1 |
A Whiter Shade of Pale |
Procol Harum |
2 |
Hey Jude |
The Beatles |
3 |
Nights in White Satin |
The Moody Blues |
Thanks, Wilfried van Damme
In December 1999 the same station (aiming at a '30 plus' audience) organised "a Song of the Millennium contest'', to which approximately 150,000 listeners responded. AWSoP (which was voted "the best song of the 'sixties" [see above]) ended up at number 10. The winner was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
The Top 2000 of Dutch Radio 2 is now available on the
Internet, and it's got some nice surprises:
# 1072 |
Conquistador (two places higher than Lazy Sunday Afternoon ...) |
# 871 |
Homburg |
# 755 |
A Salty Dog |
# 10 |
A Whiter Shade of Pale |
One has to go to www.omroep.nl/radio2/2000op2.html
and then click on "Klik hier om de TOP2000 te downloaden"
(isn't Dutch easy for English speakers!?). Downloading a Top 2000
may, of course, take some time.
The document itself appears to be at www.omroep.nl/radio2/doc/top2000.doc but I'm not sure whether one can directly access this URL. I've tried, but got the reply 'cannot connect to the server', which may simply mean that the lines are too busy.
(Thanks, Eric /
Wilfried)
