Assisting the Casanova: AWSoP in literature

Jonas Söderström

Cover of

Nästa som rör mig ('The next one who touches me') was only the second novel by one of Sweden's best-loved poets, Bodil Malmsten.

The next one who touches me, published in 1996, is the story about a young Swedish girl, living in Paris. She has been a model - now she's a thief, but she steals only in the most exclusive parts of the city... "A story about self-defence", as the text on the cover puts it.

"James" is the photographer who put her on the cover of Vogue - and seduced her as well, using a phrase well-known to us:

Translated:
"The whiteness of you, said James, you're so white, he said in his dry soft voice, a whiter shade of pale, but that I was too young to remember that song.
I was not too young, have never been.
Neither too nor young, never too young.
The softness of you, he said, like an ad - silky soft, he said."
