A Whiter Shade of Pale

'In through my letter-box ...'

Vanessa Hart writes to BtP (January 2011)

'Thank you for building such a great Procol Harum web-site. I visit often, and enjoy browsing through the labyrinth of pages. I have attached an article for your archive, from a book named Rock Gazetteer of Great Britain by Pete Frame, 1989.'

The wording states: 'The very envelope in which the lyrics to A Whiter Shade of Pale were sent to Gary Brooker by Keith Reid, the Procul [sic] lyrics'

Keith Reid's distinctive handwriting is instantly recognisable. Eastwood is part of Leigh-on-Sea, Southend.

Below, a larger shot of the postmark: 'South Lambeth' is readable in the original, under which is a number 4, for the old postal district (these days Lambeth has the SW4 postcode.) The date follows, albeit very obscured, possibly starting with 21. Next the time, ending with 'PM', and along the bottom is probably 'GPO', General Post Office.
