The Prodigal Stranger: session pictures

Unsteady Freddie

Thanks, Unsteady Freddie, for these splendid offerings. By way of a stylistic contrast, see BJ in the studio in the mid-70s. Who knows when we shall be able to show work-in-progress on another Procol studio album! (see here, of course!)

Gary Brooker, Bronxville, New York, during the recording of The Prodigal Stranger,
and during his pony-tail days

Keith Reid, Bronxville, New York, during the recording of The Prodigal Stranger: grand
chair! Anyone identify the band in the pictures behind?

Robin Trower, Bronxville, New York, during the recording of The Prodigal Stranger: it
could well be KR to his left – and that chair also appears in the first picture on this page.

A good shot of the set-up: slim keyboard on slim stand, digital recording machines to the right,
monitor speaker just in front of the control-room window

Gary holding a guitar, and, by the look of it, a Rizla, or else a business-card. This sofa also appears on the second picture on this page, if anyone's trying to piece together the topography of the studio.

Robin plays in reflective mode: it's not clear what the many-lipped cabinet is in the background,
but there's no huge Marshall stack visible. An umbrella – a strong Prodigal Stranger motif –
hangs furled in the background.

Gary 'Skate Escape' Brooker listening to playback; note the 'Gary' and 'Keith' mugs !

Some interaction in the studio: can anybody identify the keyboard? Yes, George Bertok can ... here!

At a different studio, mixing the album: Keith and Gary, with Unsteady Freddie (right)
and his daughter Courtney: Palers may remember her calling Procol Harum "Purple Harry" and "Broken Arm" in response to Gary's accent – he pronounced Procol Harum almost as "Brokal 'Arum"
(which Keith Reid refers to

(thanks, Unsteady Freddie)
